Sloan Research Fellowships is by far the oldest program of the Sloan Foundation, although those who receive the grants are among the youngest scholars the Foundation assists. The Sloan Research Fellowships were established in 1995 to provide support and recognition to young scientists, often in their first appointments to university faculties, who were endeavoring to set up laboratories and establish their independent research projects with little or no outside support. Candidates for Sloan Research Fellowships are required to hold the Ph.D (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, or neuroscience, or in a related interdisciplinary field, and must be tenure track faculty in the United States or Canada. They may be no more than six years from completion of the most recent Ph.D or equivalent as of the year of their nomination, unless special circumstances such as military service, a change of field, or child rearing are involved or unless they have held a faculty appointment for less than two years.
Proposals for new IGERT projects as well as proposals based on existing IGERT projects may be submitted. The IGERT program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists, engineers, and educators with the interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills to become in their own careers the leaders and creative agents for change. The program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate greater diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to the development of a diverse, globally-engaged science and engineering workforce. Recipients of an NSF award from the Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education Program, the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) Program the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program or an NSF-supported Center, are eligible to apply for support under the AWARE component of NSF's East Asia and Pacific Program. The Environmental Protection Agency is soliciting grant applications to establish one Great Rivers Ecological Indicator Research program. The goal of the program is to support research for the development of biological indicators to report on the status and trends of large river systems. The geographic focus of this solicitation is the Central Basin of the U.S.; the rivers of interest being the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio. Stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and other neurological and musculoskeletal conditions that led to muscle paralysis or impaired function are often associated with contractures. This is a disabling condition that involves the overgrowth of muscle with connective tissue cells, severely limiting the function of affected limbs and joints. This RFA is aimed at understanding the pathophysiology of contractures in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this disabling condition. This RFA will support exploratory studies in the molecular and cellular basis of muscle contractures in order to understand the pathophysiological progression and to suggest therapeutic strategies. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command is soliciting proposals for scientific studies on biomechanical influences on bone, with the goal of preventing stress fractures in initial entry military training and optimizing bone health in young men and women that will protect them against bone diseases later in life. The solicitation provides opportunities for the collection of pilot data to test novel hypotheses for which preliminary data may not be available. Studies sought include but are not limited to: 1) the effect of resistance training on bone structures and function; 2) practical monitoring strategies to identify individuals at risk for stress fracture injury; 3) physiological interactions of bone and muscle turnover and stress fracture risk; 4) effects of high intensity exercise on the bone remodeling process, and 5) intervention designed to optimize bone turnover favoring bone accretion in physically active populations. To facilitate the development of innovative research programs for understanding the law and legal processes, the Law and Social Science program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites scholars to submit proposals for Law and Social Science Mid-Career Training Fellowships. This fellowship will provide an award of up to $15,000 for support of law and social science scholars who enroll in advanced methodological or theoretical training (e.g., courses, institutes, workshops, and seminars).
