14-1 Joint Services & AF Chemical and Biological Defense Assessments, Modeling and Development (AFRL)
Air Force Research Laboratory, Human Effectiveness Directorate, Deployment and Sustainment Division, (AFR/Hess) solicits research proposals for the Joint Services & AF Chemical and Biological Defense Assessments, Modeling and Development effort. This effort is needed to advance Chemical and Biological Warfare Defense (CBWD) science and technology to provide an effective defense against any adversary employing weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation is a major source of financial support for educational and research projects designed to enhance the future of the graphic arts industry. The Foundation awards the following types of grants: 1) Standard Grants for a specific time period and level of support with no statement of intent for additional future support; 2) Continuing Grants for a specific time period and level of support with a statement of intent to provide additional support of the project: 3) Grants for Teacher Conferences: 4) Mini-Grants for regional studies and projects up to $2,500.
Teaching American History grants will support programs to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history. Grant awards will assist local educational agencies (LEA's), in partnerships with entities that have extensive content expertise, to develop, document, evaluate, and disseminate innovative, cohesive models of professional development. By helping teachers to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of American history as a separate subject matter within the core curriculum, these programs will improve instruction and raise student achievement. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) intends to contract for High Energy Laser Research (HELR) and is seeking contractor services to advance the state of the art in laser technologies for laser development and laser vulnerability effects testing programs at the Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Lasers Division. 14-5 Biomass Research and Development for the Production of Fuels, Power, Chemicals and other Economical and Sustainable Products (DOE)
DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is soliciting applications for the development of novel technologies and processes that service the biomass industry broadly and will integrate the productions of biomass derived fuels, power, and chemicals and other products into economical, sustainable industrial biorefineries. Under this solicitation, DOE is seeking applications that: 1) overcome existing technical and economic barriers in the conversion of cellulosic feedstocks for the production of fuels (such as ethanol, bio deisel, and hydrogen), power, and products at a cost advantage over existing starch based technologies; 2) develop high value chemicals, materials, and other products, from any biomass feedstocks and co-product streams, that can be produced at a cost advantage over conventional feedstocks and significantly improve the overall economics of the industrial biorefinery, and; 3) develop technologies that can be broadly applied and improve the economics and sustainability of the industrial biorefinery. Air Force Research Laboratory, (AFRL/MLPS) solicits research proposals for the effort Ultra High Performance Photonic Materials. The purpose of this research and development effort is to develop materials and processes for low power integrated optical devices such as switches, modulators, directional couplers, and multiplexers/demultiplexers. The Planning Grants for the Department-Level Reform of Undergraduate Engineering Education solicitation provides an opportunity for institutions to compete for planning grants to assist departmental and larger units in: Developing comprehensive plans to reformulate, streamline and update engineering technology degree programs; Developing new Curricula for emerging engineering disciplines, and meeting the emerging workforce and educational needs of U.S. industry. The Bridges for Engineering Education (BEE) Planning Grants solicitation is a collaborative effort between Directorate for Engineering and the Directorate for Education and Human Resources. The American Foundation for AIDs Research (amfAR) is pleased to announce the availability of support for research projects in biomedical science relevant to HIV/AIDS. Research Grants provide direct costs of salaries for professional and technical personnel, laboratory supplies and equipment, travel, and the publication of findings. AMFAR Fellowships support the postdoctoral investigator with limited experience in the field of HIV/AIDS to redirect or to embark on a career in HIV/AIDS research. Short term travel grants support postdoctoral (M.D., or P.h.D., or equivalent) investigators affiliated with nonprofit organizations worldwide with up to U.S. $5,000 for travel to and study or specialized training at another institution.

The Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites applications for research grants designed to develop innovative yet exploratory approaches that would contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms that impact on the virulence of infections involving two or more microorganisms or strains of microorganisms with the exception of HIV. Projects should include studies aimed at understanding the interactions of pathogens with the normal flora as well as the interactions among pathogens themselves, and how commensal organisms can be used to prevent or treat infections. The William T. Grant Foundation announces its annual competition for the W.T. Grant Scholars program which supports promising post-doctoral (but pre-tenure, tenure-tract) scholars from diverse disciplines whose research deepens and broadens the knowledge base in areas that contribute to creating a society that values young people as a resource and helps them live up to their potential. Priority research areas are youth development; programs, policies and institutions affecting young people; and adult attitudes about and perceptions of young people, along with the consequences of those attitudes and perceptions. The Health & Human Services Department's Administration on Developmental Disabilities is inviting applications for model family support demonstration projects to promote development of consumer-centers and directed systems for families of children with disabilities. Activities include establishing or expanding statewide support systems for families of children with disabilities, including a state policy council. Funds pay for data collection, pilot demonstration projects to test new approaches and designing evaluation systems to measure outcomes. (FR 3/26/02)
The Corporation for National and Community Service is seeking applications for senior companion projects and foster grandparent projects located in geographic areas that are not currently served by the program. The Senior Companion program provides opportunities for income-eligible individuals age 60 and older to serve adults with special needs. The Foster Grandparent program provides opportunities for individuals age 60 and older to serve children and youths with special or exceptional needs on a person-to-person basis. The corporation especially encourages applicants to include appropriate activities in support of homeland security in such areas as public safety, public health and disaster preparedness and relief.
