The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) propose to improve model organism databases by supporting the development of robust software components, called modules. Each module will perform a particular database function, in a way that is well documented, robust, potentially usable by more than one database, and compatible with standard data formats. These database modules will enhance existing model organism databases and will be useful for developing new ones. These shared modules will promote coordination and interoperability between databases. Eventually the modules could be used to create generic model organism databases that will be used by researchers to integrate genomic and generic information for additional organisms. The National Institutes of Health supports a predoctoral research training program in the neurosciences. The aim of the program is to encourage and support broad, early-stage (pre-thesis) training in the neurosciences by offering institutions a single comprehensive training grant. The purpose of this RFA is to foster research on 1) the impact of alcohol exposure on embryonic and adult stem cell biology; 2) the capacity of stem cells to replace tissues and/or restore function directly at sites of alcohol-induced organ and fetal damage in animal models; 3) the use of stem cells as a tool to further elucidate mechanisms of alcohol dependence and alcohol-related pathological conditions, such as brain degeneration, alcoholic liver disease, pancreatitis, and fetal alcohol syndrome; and 4) restoration of normal function in alcohol-damaged tissues using stem cells in combination with gene therapy. The purpose of this program announcement is to encourage basic research on the structures of membrane proteins at atomic resolution. The techniques of x-ray or electron diffraction and of NMR spectroscopy are emphasized in this announcement, since they presently show the most promise for producing the most complete high resolution information for the largest number of proteins. However, other methods that can provide atomic resolution information in selected cases are also of interest. It is expected that many of the projects will be collaborative efforts between biochemists and molecular biologists with expertise in the isolation and characterization of membrane-bound proteins and biophysicists with expertise in x-ray crystallography, NMR, and other structural methods. The goal of this program announcement is to encourage the use of genetically engineered mouse cancer models for cancer therapy-related goals. Mouse cancer-prone models with heritable genetic alterations are usually derived to explore mechanisms that underlie basic cancer or tumor biology. Through in-depth phenotyping, these models are often discovered to have molecular genetic profiles and histopathology that are similar to the molecular signatures and tumor progression of human malignancies. Because of the similarities, the models may be appropriate to identify molecular targets for therapy or to test new molecularly targeted agents. The models may be credentialed with new agents through systematic preclinical trials to discover how well the mice mimic the clinical course of human cancer in response, or development of resistance, to therapy.
