The Kansas NSF EPSCoR office has issued a call for proposals to be part of a state proposal to the National Science Foundation's EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement Program (NSF-02-027). Program areas are: Major Initiative Grants, Faculty Start Up Grants, and Multi-User Equipment Grants. Proposals should address a major strategic focus area: Information Science and Technology, Aviation, and Living Systems. In addition to submitting a Letter of Intent by March 1 and a Preproposal March 15, investigators will present a summary of the project to the review committee on April 6.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) invites applications from individual research investigators to join the recently established consortia under the Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism (INIA). The initial INIA initiative created two consortia of highly integrated, multidisciplinary, collaborative research projects that are focused on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying various aspects of neuroadaption to alcohol. Each of the two INIA consortia are incorporating neurobiological, behavioral, and molecular genetic techniques to determine how various aspects of neuroadaption ultimately contribute to excessive alcohol intake. The intention of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to support additional research projects that can justify the use of the established resources supported through the consortia, and at the same time, be integrated with the existing scientific goals of either of the two INIA consortia. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is seeking small grant (R03) applications in specific areas to: 1) stimulate and facilitate the entry of others into aging research, and 2) encourage established investigators to enter new targeted, high priority areas in this research field. This Small Grant Program provides support for pilot research that is likely to lead to a subsequent individual research project grant (R01) that is focused on aging and/or a significant advancement of aging research. The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) announces the availability of grant funds and requests applications for the Agriculture Risk Management Education Competitive Grants Program (RME) for fiscal year (FY) 2002 to provide comprehensive risk management education for agricultural producers in the United States. The goal of the Interagency Education Research Initiative (IERI) is to increase knowledge of scaling up by supporting research that investigates the effectiveness of educational interventions in reading, mathematics, and the sciences as they are implemented in varied school settings with diverse student populations. The ultimate aim of IERI is to identify the conditions under which effective evidence-based interventions to improve preK-12 student learning and achievement in reading, mathematics, and the sciences succeed when applied on a large scale. It is the focus on scaling up as a topic of investigation that gives IERI its distinct identity as a federally sponsored program of research. The study of scaling up requires investigators to integrate an understanding of the learning outcomes related to specific educational interventions with a rigorous analysis of the logistical, organizational, political, and economic factors that facilitate or impede the implementations of the interventions in varied school settings. On the basis of information submitted in response to this invitation, a contract agency will be selected for Study 1, NCHRP Project 20-58 (1), Detailed Planning for Research on Accelerating the Renewal of America's Highways (Renewal). It is imperative that the research plan be strategic in its approach, identifying research with the greatest potential to make significant advances in achieving highway renewal that is performed rapidly, causes minimum disruption, and produces long-lived facilities. The design of the research plan shall take into account the entire highway delivery process, i.e., financing planning, design, construction, and maintenance and examine the gains that can be made toward the desired goal through improvements in each phase of the process. Research may be proposed in any number of areas, so the approach to developing the research plan should include, but not be limited to, consideration of areas such as: advanced technologies, public participation, innovative methods, advanced materials, nonintrusive repair and rehabilitation, construction methods and equipment, financing, contracting, and privatization. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho Operations Office, is seeking applications for conceptual designs for steel making processes that will revolutionize the way steel is made in the 21st century. This is the next step in advancing the future of the domestic steel industry and compliments the current program based on the Steel Technology Roadmap. Each award made in response to this solicitation will be for a maximum of two years. During this period, each awardee will develop a conceptual design with supporting technical, marketing, economic and policy data; describe opportunities and barriers; and develop energy, environmental and economic targets. The Fogarty International Research Collaboration Award (FIRCA) facilitates collaborative research between U.S. biomedical scientists supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and investigators in the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean Region, as well as in countries of the former Soviet Union, and Central Eastern Europe. The FIRCA will extend and enhance the research interests of both the U.S.scientist and the collaborating scientist, and will help to increase the research capacity of the foreign scientist and institution. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) invites Cooperative Agreement Applications (U01) for outstanding multidisciplinary research aimed at the development of new technologies, for which proof-of-principle exists, or for the advancement of existing technologies for simultaneous multi-analyte detection in saliva and other oral fluids. The focus of such diagnostic technologies will primarily be in the areas in which saliva or other oral fluid based diagnostics can have a major impact: 1) oral diagnostics; 2) systemic disease diagnosis (e.g., autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease and cancers); 3) drug monitoring, (e.g., drug compliance, pharmokinetics and pharmcogenomics) and; 4) identification of potentially lethal agents (e.g., anthrax bacillus or chemical agents) dispersed by bioterrorists. 7-15 Studies of the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) of Human Genetic Variation Research for Individuals and Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups (NIH)
Human genetic variation research, especially as it relates to risk factors for common, complex disorders, is leading to increased knowledge regarding variation among individuals and how this variation may contribute to the health status of individuals. It is also leading to more knowledge about variation within and among different racial and ethnic groups (to the extent that such groups can reasonably be identified). While the ultimate goal of studies aimed at relating human genetic variation to disease risk is the improvement of human health, concerns have been raised that the findings of some genetic variation research may be misunderstood, and also that such findings, if interpreted incorrectly and misused, will exacerbate, rather than ameliorate, already existing health disparities among racial, ethnic, and socio economic groups. The NIH, through its Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research Program, proposes a new initiative to encourage additional research on the ELSI implications of genetic variation research for both individuals and for diverse population groups.
