NIOSH supports research to identify and investigate the relationships between
hazardous working conditions and associated occupational diseases and injuries;
to develop more sensitive means of evaluating hazards at work sites, as
well as methods for measuring early markers of adverse health effects and
injuries; to develop new protective equipment, engineering control technology,
and work practices to reduce the risks of occupational hazards; and to
evaluate the technical feasibility or application of a new or improved
occupational safety and health procedure, method, technique, or system.

The goal of the ADVANCE program is to increase the representation and advancement
of women in academic sciences and engineering careers, thereby contributing
to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce.
Creative strategies to realize this goal are sought from men and women.
Members from underrepresented minority groups and individual with disabilities
are encouraged to apply. In FY 2001 this pilot program will offer three
types of awards: Fellows Awards will enable promising individuals to establish
or reestablish full-time independent academic research and education careers
in institutions of higher learning. Institutional Transformation Awards
will support academic institutional transformation to promote the increased
participation and advancement of women scientists and engineers in academe.
Leadership Awards will recognize the outstanding contributions made to
date by organizations and/or individuals who have enabled the increased
participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering
careers. NSF 01-69

Collaboration in Basic Science and Engineering (COBASE) is funded by the
National Science Foundation (NSF) and administered by the Office for Central
Europe and Eurasia of the National Research Council. The program provides
grants to individual American specialists who plan to establish new research
partnerships with their colleagues in Central/Eastern Europe (CEE) and
the Newly Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (NIS). COBASE Project
Development and Initiation Grants support American specialists who wish
to host and/or visit their CEE or NIS colleagues in order to initiate research
project and prepare collaborative research proposals for submission to
NSF. In contrast to previous program rules, U.S. applicants may now request
support for up to two visits in either or both directions (i.e., either
traveling to CEE/NIS or hosting a colleague from the region here in the
U.S.), with the total combined duration of the visit(s) not to exceed eight
weeks. Each individual visits proposed must be at least two weeks (10-14
days) in length.

The American Cancer Society makes research grants in a variety of cancer-relevant
areas. Research Scholar Grants for Beginning Investigators are awarded
to investigators in the first eight years of their independent research
careers to support basic, preclinical, clinical and epidemiologic research
projects. Research Scholar Grants in Psychosocial and Behavioral Research
for Beginning and Senior Investigators are awarded to investigators at
any stage of their careers. Research Opportunity Grants provide rapid,
one-time funding for novel ideas or for targeting urgent problems with
immediate human benefit. Postdoctoral Fellowships are also available.

This initiative is designed to stimulate and solicit studies on gastrointestinal
tract, liver and exocrine pancreas development and stem cells. Key research
issues to be addressed will be: 1) how the developing endoderm gives rise
to heterogeneous populations of cells in these developing and adult tissues;
and 2) the molecular characterization of stem cells and their immediate
