1-1 Short-Term Travel Grants (IREX)

The Short-Term Travel Grants provide support to US scholars for visits of up to two months to conduct postdoctoral research, present papers at conferences, or consult with colleagues in countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Iran and Turkey. Funding for projects in Central and Eastern Europe is very limited; please contact IREX regarding your eligibility before submitting an application. Note: Projects in Turkey and Iran must be comparative and address these countries in relation to Central and Eastern Europe or Eurasia.

ARTS & HUMANITIES

1-2 Challenge America (NEA)

The Challenge America initiative's goals are to foster arts education and community-wide public outreach initiatives in rural or underserved areas and to engage artists, arts organizations and american communities in partnership to make the arts central to community life. For FY 2001, Challenge America Fast Track Grants will address the priority areas of Positive Alternatives for Youth: Creative Links (deadline February 1) and Community Arts Development: ArtsREACH (deadline May 1). Positive Alternatives for Youth projects generally should concentrate on youth participants in grades 6 through 12. The Community Arts Development program supports partnerships between arts organizations and community groups that highlight the potential of the arts to address key community concerns.

BUSINESS

1-3 Employment Research (Upjohn)

The Upjohn Institute invites submission of proposals to conduct policy-relevant research on employment issues. The Institute offers a range of funding opportunities. Grants for research that lead to book-length manuscripts have higher funding limits than in previous years. A Grant-in-Residence program allows grantees to conduct research at the Institute. A Mini-Grant program provides funds for innovative research papers that have special funding needs. The Institute is particularly interested in funding proposals that address policy-relevant issues in the three areas listed: Employment Relationships; Low Wages and Public Policy; and, Social Insurance.

EDUCATION

1-4FIPSE Comprehensive Program (ED)

The Department of Education has announced its 2001 Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education Comprehensive Program. Invitational Priorities are: 1) make more productive use of resources; 2) disseminate innovative programs which have already been locally developed, implemented, and evaluated; 3) support new ways of ensuring equal access to postsecondary education and improve rates of retention for low-income and underrepresented minority students; 4) improve campus climates for learning by creating a safe, welcoming, environment; 5) support innovative reforms of undergraduate, graduate and professional curricula; 6) support the professional development of full- and part-time faculty by assessing and rewarding effective teaching; 7) promote innovative school- college partnerships and improve the preparation of K-12 teachers. 1-5 Bilingual Education Program Development and Implementation (ED)

The Education Department is inviting applications to develop and implement new comprehensive bilingual education or special alternative instructional programs for limited English proficient students, including programs of early childhood, K-12, gifted and talented, and vocational and applied technology education. ED will give competitive preference to applications for projects that contribute to systemic education reform in empowerment zones and enterprise communities. ED also is particularly interested in applications that focus on reading and mathematics, preparation for postsecondary education and safe and drug-free schools. (FR 12/14/00)

1-6 Summer Institute for English Language Educators from South Africa (STATE)

The State Department's Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau is seeking applications to provide a six-week academic training program for about 28 English language educators from South Africa. The institute will provide training in content-based English as a second language (ESL) materials development and delivery, classroom management and curriculum design. 1-7 IERF Research Grants (IERF)

The purpose of the International Education Research Foundation (IERF) Research Grants is to aid IERF in carrying out the following mission: To investigate educational systems of the world and publish and distribute findings exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes to interested persons and organizations on a non-discriminatory basis.

ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS & PHYSICAL SCIENCES

1-8 Spins in Semiconductors (SPINS) (DOD)

DARPA's Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is soliciting proposals for research and development of new materials, devices, components and subsystems using spins in semiconductors. DARPA is seeking innovative ways to utilize the spin degree of freedom in semiconductors. Areas of particular interest are: Spin Quantum Devices; Spin Coherent Devices; and Spin Quantum Information Processing and Communication. In addition, DARPA is also interested in other highly innovative ways to utilized the spin degree of freedom to provide significantly enhanced performance or totally new functionality in electronics, microelectronics, opto-electronics or quantum information processing. 1-9 Community-Based Interventions to Prevent Childhood Agricultural Injury and Disease (CDC)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announces the availability of fiscal year (FY) 2001 funds for grant applications for research on evaluation of the effectiveness of currently used community-based interventions in reducing childhood agricultural injury and disease. The research needs identified in this announcement are consistent with the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) developed by NIOSH and partners in the public and private sectors. NORA priorities with specific relevance to this announcement are: traumatic injuries; special populations at risk; control technology and personal protective equipment; and intervention effectiveness research. 1-10 Stem Cell Plasticity in Hematopoietic and Non-Hematopoietic Tissue (NIH)

The objective of this initiative is to promote the thorough exploration and characterization of stem cell plasticity in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic tissue. Research efforts are needed to test stem cell plasticity in a rigorous manner. It is of particular importance to characterize cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to the capacity of adult stem cells with hematopoietic potential to express other potentials and precursor cells of adult non-hematopoietic tissues to express hematopoietic potential. Other areas of high interest include the ability of stem cells from non-neuronal tissues to differentiate along neuronal and glial lineages. HL-01-007 (NIHG 11/13/00)

1-11 Exploratory Research on Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy (NIH)

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invite exploratory and developmental research grant applications (R21) that will broaden the base of inquiry on Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Because exploratory projects may require a preliminary test of feasibility, this initiative will provide short-term support for such preliminary work. Each research plan should begin with a short paragraph describing the feasibility of the approach to increase knowledge about disease pathogenesis and disease processes that might be ameliorated. 1-12 Health Disparity in Preterm Birth: The Role of Infectious and Inflammatory Processes(NIH)

The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to determine the role of infectious and inflammatory processes leading to preterm birth and adverse neonatal outcomes in different ethnic populations. The research proposed in response to this solicitation should involve multidisciplinary investigations to clarify the potential role of infectious diseases and the associated immune response as a cause of early preterm birth and fetal and neonatal morbidity. 1-13 Early Head Start (HHS)

The Health and Human Services Department's Administration on Children, Youth and Families is inviting applications for universities to conduct longitudinal cross-site research on the Early Head Start program in partnership with the original 17 Early Head Start research sites. (FR 12/13/00)

1-14 Human Genome: Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (DOE)

The Energy Department is inviting applications for research on the ethical, legal and social implications of using information and knowledge resulting from the Human Genome Program. Applications should focus on issues of genetics and the workplace; storage of genetic information and tissue samples; education, including creation and dissemination of relevant education materials; and complex or multigenic characteristics and conditions (for example, behavioral conditions, diseases of aging and susceptibility to workplace exposure hazards). 1-15 Prevention of Alcohol-Related Problems Among Adolescents (NIH)

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) seeks to grant applications to conduct research on comprehensive interventions to prevent and reduce alcohol use and misuse among adolescents in racially, ethnically and economically diverse urban communities. These prevention strategies should seek to change or strengthen community norms, school environments, and parental norms and practices regarding alcohol use by youth, improve adolescent knowledge, attitudes, cognitions, intentions, and refusal skills regarding alcohol use and its consequences, and reduce the availability of alcohol to youth. Additional intervention strategies, such as modifications of after-school environments, are not precluded. Applicants are encouraged to develop and/or test interventions for young adolescents in later grades of elementary school and middle or junior high school, the majority of whom have not yet begun to use alcohol or other substances. STUDENT

1-16 Programs for Developing the Next Generation of Latino Leaders (CHCI)

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), established by members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, is an educational organization dedicated to developing the next generation of Latino leaders. The Fellowship Program offers individuals with a BA/BS or graduate degree or currently enrolled graduate students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the federal level in the public policy area of their choice. The Summer Internship Program is an eight week program in the nation's capital for college undergraduates who are assigned to congressional offices to gain first-hand knowledge of how government works. CHCI Scholarship Awards are offered to students who have demonstrated a strong commitment toward exercising leadership in their community and who plan to continue contributing to the future in their area of study and/or interest for the social, political or economic good of the country. Scholarships are available for students attending community college, four-year colleges or graduate school.
