IBC Training Modules Available
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the University
Research Compliance Office (URCO) have developed online training
modules for personnel conducting research using infectious agents,
or recombinant DNA (rDNA) at Kansas State University. The modules
are largely based on information found in the Biosafety in Microbiological
and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 4th Edition, and The NIH
Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules.
For in-depth guidance and information about biosafety, please consult
the BMBL in its entirety at http://www.cdc.gov/od/ohs/biosfty/bmbl4/bmbl4toc.htm,
or the NIH Guidelines at
http://www4.od.nih.gov/oba/rac/guidelines/guidelines.html ,
for comprehensive regulatory information about use of recombinant
DNA and gene transfer.
It is the responsibility of the institution to provide adequate training and oversight for researchers who use infectious agents and/or rDNA at KSU. The IBC performs the oversight function by reviewing proposed activities, and approving Registration Documents for using infectious agents and/or rDNA. The implementation of the IBC training modules addresses the institutional training requirement.
All personnel listed in the IBC Registration Document as proposing to work with infectious agents and/or rDNA at KSU, must complete the applicable training modules prior to final IBC approval of the project. The training modules must be completed only once. Upon completion, the URCO will issue a Certificate of Completion of Training, and maintain a permanent record of training in our database.
There are currently five IBC Training Modules. Depending on the agent in use, a combination of Training Modules may be required prior to final approval of the IBC Registration Document by the IBC. Disclaimer
The IBC training modules are password protected. To access the username and password, please email the Research Compliance Office at comply@ksu.edu or call us at 532-3224.
Steps for completing IBC training modules
- Determine the recommended biosafety level appropriate for your
project by consulting the:
- List the recommended biosafety level in your IBC Registration
Document
- Contact the URCO at 532-3224, or comply@ksu.edu,
for the password for the IBC Training Modules
- Match the recommended CDC or NIH biosafety level of your proposed
activity with the biosafety category of activities listed below
- Complete the appropriate Training Modules required for the biosafety
category that matches the recommended biosafety level of your
proposed activity.
- Upon completion of each required training module, hit
the "CONTINUE" button once more. You will be
asked to electronically submit your record of completion to the
URCO.
- If, as a result of committee review, the IBC changes the recommended
biosafety level for your project, complete any additional training
modules required due to the newly assigned biosafety level - the
URCO will notify you if additional modules are required as a result
of registration document review by the IBC.
The University Research Compliance Office will maintain a permanent record of your training profile, and will crosscheck the training database prior to final IBC approval of your proposal. Completion of individual IBC training modules will be a one-time requirement. However, we may prepare additional IBC training modules in the future that address pertinent topics as they arise.
The principal investigator (P.I.) or laboratory director is responsible for providing technical and agent specific training for all personnel using infectious agents or rDNA in their activity. It is also the responsibility of the P.I. or laboratory director to ensure that all new collaborators or employees that participate in a project using infectious or recombinant DNA agents, complete the applicable IBC online training modules. The online training is in addition to any agent and/or technique/procedure specific training required from the P.I. or laboratory director.
Containment Categories of Infectious Agent or Recombinant DNA Activity: Match the biosafety containment level (BL) of your proposed infectious agent or rDNA activity to the biosafety containment level listed below, then complete the training modules listed under your project's containment category. **Note that you do not need to complete module #5 unless your project involves rDNA.
Laboratory BL-1 or BL-2: use of an infectious or recombinant DNA agent classified by the CDC and/or NIH guidelines as Biosafety Level 1 or Biosafety Level 2(no animal work)
- Module 1 - Introduction to Biosafety and Laboratory Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2
- Module 5** - The NIH Guidelines for Personnel Performing Research Using Recombinant DNA Molecules
Vertebrate Animal BL-1 or BL-2: use of an infectious or recombinant DNA agent classified by the CDC and/or NIH guidelines as Biosafety Level 1 or Biosafety Level 2, using animals
- Module 1 - Introduction to Biosafety and Laboratory Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2
- Module 2 - Vertebrate Animal Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2
- Module 5** - The NIH Guidelines for Personnel Performing Research Using Recombinant DNA Molecules
++Laboratory BL-3 use of an infectious or recombinant DNA agent classified by the CDC and/or NIH guidelines as Biosafety Level 3 (no animal work)
- Module 1 - Introduction to Biosafety and Laboratory Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2
- Module 3 - Laboratory Biosafety Level 3
- Module 5** - The NIH Guidelines for Personnel Performing Research Using Recombinant DNA Molecules
++Vertebrate Animal BL-3: use of an infectious or recombinant DNA agent classified by the CDC and/or NIH guidelines as Biosafety Level 3, using animals
- Module 1 - Introduction to Biosafety and Laboratory Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2
- Module 2 - Vertebrate Animal Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2
- Module 3 - Laboratory Biosafety Level 3
- Module 4 - Vertebrate Animal Biosafety Level 3
- Module 5** - The NIH Guidelines for Personnel Performing Research Using Recombinant DNA Molecules
++The use of agents classified at Biosafety level 3 is not currently authorized at Kansas State University.
