Why Do We Have Mandatory Training?

Training Modules

Training Module 1, Introduction and Overview of Research Involving Animals, is mandatory for all persons involved in research, training or testing with animals at KSU. Additional training modules are targeted for species or procedures specific to your proposed activity. If you have questions on which traning modules you are required to complete, please contact the URCO office, 532-3224.

Procedures to complete the training modules:
 Click to enter the individual modules below. Each module consists of training slides and a quiz. You will be required to enter your K-State EID and password to access the training. 
 After completing each module, you will be asked to complete an assurance page and submit it electronically. 
 A certificate page will be displayed to confirm training module completion. You may print this for your records. 
 The URCO will log your assurance into its database to verify and document your training status. 
 Verification of completion of all applicable training modules must be received by the URCO prior to final approval of an IACUC application. 
Module 1
Overview of Research Involving Animals (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using any live vertebrate animals)
Module 2The Dog in Research, Testing and Teaching (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using dogs)
Module 3
The Rat and Mouse in Biomedical Research (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using members of the genus Rattus and/or Mus.)
Module 4The Hamster in Research, Testing and Teaching (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using Hamsters)
Module 5The Guinea Pig in Research, Testing, or Teaching (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using Guinea pigs)

The Cat in Research, Testing, or Teaching (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using cats)
Module 7Rodent Aseptic Surgery (Mandatory for all personnel performing rodent survival surgery)
Module 8Cattle in Research, Testing or Teaching (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using cattle)
Module 9The Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching (Mandatory for all personnel involved in research, testing, or teaching using Agricultural animals)
Module 10Rabies Awareness for Animal Workers (Mandatory for all persons involved in research, teaching, or testing using: Livestock, Wild Mammals and Random Source Dogs and Cats)

The online training modules have been developed from a number of sources, including, but not limited to: The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals; The Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals for Agricultural Research and Teaching; The Animal Welfare Act; The PHS Policy for Animal Care and Use; The AVMA Panel on Euthanasia; The AALAS Technologist and Technician Training Manuals; and the ACLAM Laboratory Animal Medicine & Science Training Programs. They are intended to address institutional statutory requirements for animal care and use training for all personnel associated with animals used in research, testing, or teaching at KSU. They are not intended to be the definitive source for detailed information about animal care and use. Disclaimer

Training Videos

Introduction to VTV, Handwashing Techniques, and the Needle/Sharps Safety video are all MANDATORY. All other videos are project-specific. Participation is dictated by the PI of each project.
