Privately-Owned Animals on University Agricultural Property

The University Policy and Procedures Manual addresses the presence of privately-owned animals on university property and buildings (7840.100 � Control of Animals of KSU Property). This primarily concerns the presence of dogs on campus.

This IACUC guideline supplements that policy in the specific instance where employees living or working on university agricultural property have non-university owned animals present at the work site. This situation can occur most frequently with horses, dogs, and cats at Animal Science and Industry (AS&I) Farms. Allowing privately-owned animals in the AS&I units is a departmental management decision, but several health and welfare conditions must be met from the IACUC perspective.

  • Animals must be in apparent good health with no obvious illnesses or parasite infestations
  • Injured or ill animals must receive timely, appropriate, and documented treatment / care
  • Animals must have ready documentation of a preventive health program, as evidenced by current vaccination and / or testing records as appropriate (see below for minimum requirements by species)
  • Adequate food and housing for the animals must be available if in residence
  • Animals must be appropriately restrained to minimize potential injuries to themselves, personnel, students, and / or other animals

Species Specific Requirements (all vaccinations must be current):

Horses:

  • Eastern / Western Equine Encephalitis vaccination
  • Tetanus vaccination
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Current Negative Coggins (EIA)

Dogs:

  • Distemper virus and Parvovirus vaccination
  • Rabies vaccination

Cats: (as possible)

  • Rabies vaccination
  • Costs incurred and responsibility for payment is a management decision.
