Department of Psychology announced several scholastic awards at its recent spring banquet.

The Peterson Prize for the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Psychology is awarded to the undergraduate psychology major who excels in the classroom, in research, and in service to the department. This year the Peterson Prize was given to Danielle Zanotti from Yukon, OK. She graduated cum laude last December. In addition to her academic achievements, Danielle is the coauthor on a manuscript in press, two manuscripts under review, co-author of another manuscript in preparation, one as first author, and is the co-author of four conference presentations. Using Hurricane Katrina as model, KSU psychologists find racial biases skew perceptions of how much help victims need.

When assessing the amount of help someone needs, people's perceptions can be skewed by their racial biases, according to a Kansas State University study. Donald Saucier, K-State associate professor of psychology, and psychology graduate students Sara Smith, Topeka, and Jessica McManus, Maineville, Ohio, surveyed undergraduate students a year after Hurricane Katrina to examine their perceptions of the hurricane victims and the helping response. K-STATE SOPHOMORE FROM OVERLAND PARK RESEARCHES THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS AND ATTITUDES ELICITED FROM DIFFERENT MUSIC LYRICS.

Patriotic music may close minds, children's music may open them. Eduardo Alvarado, sophomore in pre-law from Overland Park, is looking at the behaviors elicited from the musical lyrics of common songs. He is working with Donald Saucier, associate professor of psychology. The preliminary findings showed that the patriotic songs had a negative effect on the research subjects, as shown through their responses to survey questions about other cultures and diversity. Songs like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" were meant to be neutral primes, but the researchers found that they stimulated a pro-social response. A short news release is available at http://ow.ly/MQoj

K-STATE PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH SHOWS HOW POPULAR SONGS CAN CUE SPECIFIC MEMORIES.

Power of music lies beyond sound. Richard Harris, professor of psychology, found that people don't have to hear a song to evoke clear memories of a particular time in life. Rather, just thinking about the song is enough to spark nostalgia. Even though "Eye of the Tiger" was released in 1982, before the research subjects were born, Harris and students found that 24 percent reported that the song provoked a strong memory of high school sporting events. The research appeared in the journal Psychology of Music. A short news release is available at http://ow.ly/E7D3

K-STATE ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGISTS USE THE VIDEO GAME ROCK BAND TO STUDY HOW PEOPLE ACHIEVE FLOW WHILE AT WORK, PERFORMING SKILLED TASKS.

What Rock Band can teach us about the workplace. By playing the video game Rock Band for an hour, Kansas State University students were able to help a pair of psychology professors with their research to understand how people can achieve flow while at work or while performing skilled tasks. Clive Fullagar, a professor, and Patrick Knight, an associate professor, found that -- like Goldilocks -- most people achieve flow with work that is neither too easy nor too hard but just right. FOUR K-STATE STUDENTS RECEIVE FELLOWSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECTS IN PSYCHOLOGY

Four Kansas State University psychology students were selected to receive the first Doreen Shanteau Undergraduate Research Fellowships. The $500 awards support upper-division undergraduate students in psychology for their work with a faculty mentor on psychological research. The fellowships were established by K-State's James Shanteau, university distinguished professor of psychology, in memory of his wife, Doreen. Students must be nominated for the award.

The fellowship recipients will conduct their research projects during the 2009-2010 school year in collaboration with their faculty mentors, and will be expected to present their findings at the K-State psychology department's annual Undergraduate Research Convocation at the end of the spring semester and to submit their findings for publication in a psychology journal.

Award recipients, all seniors in psychology, and their projects are:

Laura Dare, Manhattan, will study the relationship between the ability of nicotine to enhance experience and impulsive choice, such as choosing small immediate rewards over larger delayed rewards. Dare predicts that rats who are more impulsive will be more sensitive to the reward-enhancing effects of nicotine and will test her prediction using a paradigm in which rats will respond for sucrose reinforcers in a delay-choice task. Her project, in behavioral neuroscience, will be done with Matthew Palmatier, K-State assistant professor of psychology.

Scott Fluke, Olathe, will study how individuals may use superstition to reduce the anxiety they may feel as a result of their mortality. Fluke predicts that when participants are provided with the opportunity to use superstition, they will increase their perceptions of control and lower their degrees of anxiety, and will consequently better manage their fear of death. He will conduct his project in social psychology with K-State's Donald Saucier, associate professor of psychology.

Mason Burns, Overland Park, will examine how an individual's levels of narcissism -- inflated feelings of self-worth -- influence his or her reaction to positive or negative feedback following a mortality salience cue. Burns predicts that individuals higher in narcissism will be more likely to respond anti-socially after they receive negative feedback from potential dating partners and have had their mortality made salient. He will conduct his social psychology project with K-State's Saucier.

Emily Reinhardt, Poland, Ohio, will study if enriched rearing conditions during childhood and adolescence will reduce the symptoms of anxiety in rats. Reinhardt predicts that rats raised in enriched conditions with novel stimuli will have their levels of anxiety reduced more quickly than rats raised in other conditions, and will test her prediction using a Pavlovian conditioning paradigm. She will conduct her project in behavioral neuroscience with Mary Cain, K-State associate professor of psychology.

Two Psychology Majors, Jamie Parker and Becky Steinert, were selected as McNair Scholars.

The McNair Scholars Program is a comprehensive program structured to prepare undergraduates for successful careers as graduate students, professors, and professional researchers. Students in the program are paired with K-State faculty in their field of interest for summer research projects. The students present their work at the end of the summer and some continue their research projects into the fall semester.

Jamie Parker is in the process of collecting data on a psychology study examining applicant responses to employment interview questions. He is  working with Drs. Lester Loschky and Satoris Culbertson in our department.

Becky Steinert studied people’s perception of time and the influence of the presence of a clock to understand time-related stressors. Her project advisers are Fred Newton, Director of Counseling Services, and Eun-Hee Kim, Research Analyst for Counseling Services.
