Description of Research
1. I am now studying judgment and decision making. Particularly I am interested with decision making and regret. Here are some other factors I’ve considered while studying regret.
- Responsibility: When a decision maker has more responsibility they tend to feel more regret. However, this is a controversial issue. Based on my experiment, the amount of experienced regret was influenced by the level of responsibility.
- Locus of control: People who have external locus of control tend to find reasons in environmental factors. What I expected was that people with internal and external LOC would show different level of regret after the same event.
- Action/ Inaction: This was another interesting topic I focused on. According to literatures, action causes more intense regret than inaction in short term. It is also dependent on the situation; what the situation considers to be normal behavior (action or inaction) caused less regret.
- Task importance: Task importance affected the degree of experienced regret of people.
2. Future directions of my research.
I would like to focus on regret of action and inaction. Right now I am doing my project on Blackstone ratio and the effect of ‘regret’ in this ratio. I also am interested in the model of regret (factors influencing, causing regret and factors influenced by regret), coping strategies people use to deal with unpleasantness which regret generates, regrets in consumer behavior, counterfactual thinking, and commission/ omission bias (or error).
