Information to Add to Course Syllabi

Statement Regarding Academic Honesty

The following statement should be added to class syllabi:

Kansas State University has an Honor System based on personal integrity, which is presumed to be sufficient assurance in academic matters one's work is performed honestly and without unauthorized assistance. Undergraduate and graduate students, by registration, acknowledge the jurisdiction of the Honor System. The policies and procedures of the Honor System apply to all full and part-time students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses on-campus, off-campus, and via distance learning. The honor system website can be reach via the following URL: www.ksu.edu/honor .

A component vital to the Honor System is the inclusion of the Honor Pledge which applies to all assignments, examinations, or other course work undertaken by students. The Honor Pledge is implied, whether or not it is stated: "On my honor, as a student, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work." A grade of XF can result from a breach of academic honesty. The F indicates failure in the course; the X indicates the reason is an Honor Pledge violation.

Statements for Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Faculty members who have a student with a disability in their class will want to contact the office of Disability Support Services (DSS) office on our campus. DSS will help faculty provide academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Students with disabilities include those having mobility impairments, visual and hearing impairments, chronic health conditions, learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. DSS is located in Holton Hall 202. The Director, Andrea Blair, can be contacted at 532-6441.

Following are suggested statements for class syllabi regarding academic accommodations for students with disabilities:

"Any student with a disability that needs a classroom accommodation, access to technology or other assistance in this course should contact Disability Support Services and/or their instructor."

or

"Any student with a disability who needs an accommodation or other assistance in this course should make an appointment to speak with me as soon as possible."

Statement for Copyright Notification

You may wish to inform students regarding copyright of your lecture materials or that you do not permit student note taking for subsequent posting on commercial websites. You also may wish to orally draw attention on the first day of classes to any such statements that you include in your syllabus. In addition to giving the notice of copyright, you should take steps to assure that your lectures are fixed in a tangible medium of expression, and hence protectable under the copyright laws. For this purpose, you can make detailed lecture notes, use detailed overheads, slides or online presentation slides, or tape record your lectures. These steps will strengthen your right to claim copyright in your lectures and will notify students of restrictions on their use. If you have lecture notes posted on a website, you may wish to protect them with a copyright notice as well. You can simply add the following information to your website: Copyright 2003 (your name here). Commercial firms who request your permission to have students take notes in your classes may contact you. It is totally at the discretion of each faculty member as to whether to grant permission for such activities. Some of these commercial firms desire to enter into a consulting agreement with individual faculty members. If that is the case, then in order to comply with the Kansas State University Consulting Policy, any agreements entered into between commercial firms and individual faculty members should be officially reported to the department head and appropriate forms submitted.

If you wish to copyright your lectures and prohibit students from posting their notes on commercial websites, you may wish to include the following on course syllabi: Copyright 2003 (your name here) as to this syllabus and all lectures. During this course students are prohibited from selling notes to or being paid for taking notes by any person or commercial firm without the express written permission of the professor teaching this course.

Statement Defining Expectations for Classroom Conduct

All student activities in the University, including this course, are governed by the Student Judicial Conduct Code as outlined in the Student Government Association By Laws, Article VI, Section 3, number 2. Students that engage in behavior that disrupts the learning environment may be asked to leave the class.
