Biographical sketch:
Dennis C. Jacobs, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1988, is Vice President and
Associate Provost for undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame. Selected as the 2002 U.S. Professor of the
Year for Doctoral and Research Universities, he has garnered a national reputation for innovative pedagogy in the
classroom and for significant contributions to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Jacobs earned a Ph.D.
from Stanford University and two B.S. degrees from the University of California at Irvine. While sustaining a dynamic
laboratory research program, he brings the same investigative spirit into the classroom - a place where reflective
examination of student learning informs teaching practice.
Abstract:
Learning reaches new heights when students are engaged within the context of a community. Examples will be provided where remote-keypad
technology and small group discussions help transform a large introductory science course into a vibrant, interactive learning
environment. In a separate course, science students are going out into the local community to collect and analyze soil, dust,
and water samples from homes where children have become lead poisoned. Students are discovering how their laboratory skills
can be used to help create a healthier home environment for disadvantaged youth.
