  • Availability to advisees
  • Appropriate referral activity
  • Use of appropriate information sources
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, polices, and procedures
  • Ability to engage to developmental advising (career and life planning) versus simply course scheduling

Nomination Procedure

The nomination procedure will include:

  • Provision of information about the award to various groups.
The request for nominations will be sent to deans and departments heads, with each dean allowed to nominate up to two individuals from his or her college.

An advertisement will be placed in the Collegian informing students that they may submit nominations for this award, and they should contact the Office of the Dean of their college to obtain the nomination information.

Information about the award and the nomination process will be sent to the student councils in each college for dissemination to students.

  • Once the nominations have been submitted, a list of each nominee's advisees will be obtained by the selection committee. At most, two of each nominee's advisees, will be randomly chosen and asked to submit a letter evaluating the nominee with regard to the quality of the advising provided to the student by the nominee.

  • The selection committee will review all of the nominations, and may then choose to conduct short interviews (less than 30 minutes) with some of the nominees, before making their selection.

The nomination packet should include:

  • Letter of nomination.
  • Letters of recommendation from two undergraduate students whom the nominee has advised.
  • Letter of recommendation from the department head that details why the nominee is deserving of this award. In particular, it should address the scope of the nominee's advising responsibilities.
  • Letter of recommendation from at least one other faculty member.
  • Brief description by the nominee of his or her advising philosophy (no more than one page).
