research interests: Dr. Kapil teaches diagnostic virology, general virology, and bovine virology to professional DVM students. His lectures emphasize the applications of basic concepts of virology in veterinary practice. Dr. Kapil uses case histories to illustrate points of interest to DVM students. Dr. Kapil is the Director of the Clinical Virology and Serology for the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. He emphasizes rapid, accurate, and economical diagnosis of animal viral disease. Dr. Kapil has an active research program with emphasis on members of the Coronaviridae subfamily, such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) and bovine coronavirus (BCV). He is interested in epidemiology and diagnosis of animal diseases including rotaviruses and bovine viral diarrhea virus, and West Nile Virus. His laboratory concentrates on understanding the role of host susceptibility factors for animal viral infections and improving animal vaccines and applications of biotechnology in veterinary medicine.
