| research interests: | Dr. Franz joined the K-State faculty in fall 2003 as director of the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center (NABC) , a collaborative appointment with the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City. He will direct the NABC, established at K-State in 2002 as an outgrowth of the university's expanding food safety and security program. With the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and other entities, the NABC is addressing threats to the agricultural economy and the nation's food supply. As director, Dr. Franz facilitates program development and faculty recruitment related to K-State's biosecurity initiatives focused on food crops, food animals, food safety and public health. He also facilitates development of K-State's research programs in the soon-to-be constructed Biosecurity Research Institute, a level-three biosafety facility for the study of agriculturally important plant and animal diseases and food safety. |
