Facility and Capabilities

The Department of Grain Science and Industry maintains one of a kind teaching and research facilities. Site preparation on the new Grain Science Complex began in Spring, 2002 and construction of the Bioprocessing and Industrial Value Added Center (BIVAC) was completed in Fall, 2004.

"The new facility will enhance both educational and research programs of the department. The flour mill, feed mill, biological value-added center, international grains center and central complex with bakery science labs and teaching areas will attract the most talented students and encourage excellence."
Steven C. Nelson, Executive Vice President, American Association of Cereal Chemists

This new facility will allow us to serve a much broader range of industries, including breakfast cereal, snack, health food, and other grain processing and soybean processing companies. The BIVAP facility will also allow us to expand our already active research efforts in developing industrial non-food uses for grains and oilseed crops.”
Virgil Smail, Head, KSU Department of Grain Science and Industry

The BIVAC building and the International Grains Program Conference Center have been completed, and groundbreaking for the Teaching Flour Mill took place in Fall, 2004. A feed mill and a teaching and research building that will house the Grain Science and Industry Department’s classrooms, research laboratories, and baking teaching laboratories are also planned for the 16-acre site.
