MA Degree Requirements

The Master of Arts in Political Science is a 30 hour degree program.  The coursework for the program involves 15 hours of core courses and 15 hours of courses in the student's area of concentration.

The five core courses include an introduction to the research methods typically used by political scientists and four seminars exposing students to the subfields of political science offered in our department.  These subfields include American government and politics, international relations, comparative politics and political thought.

Students are required to develop a concentration in one of the four subfields we offer.  Typically four of the five courses beyond the core will deal with the student's area of concentration.

Finally, students are required to complete a substantial research writing project.  There are three options for fulfilling this requirement including a thesis, a report, or advanced seminar papers.
