Pi Kappa Phi began its existence at Kansas State with a leadership lab November 21, 1976. The lab was conducted by, Jerry Mathews, Pi Kappa Phi National Director of Development, and Mark Ashley, Field Secretary for the national fraternity.
Over the Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations, which followed, however, many of these men who had pledged during this lab lost interest in forming the new fraternity. The spring semester of 1977 saw only seven of the men, who signed up, return to begin work on the fraternity. These Men were to become the nucleus from which the colony would grow.
The colony began to function immediately after the beginning of the semester. Officers were elected, committees formed, and with the help of Mark Ashley, a budget and fee system was developed. Mike Wamsley, a graduate student of K-State and a Pi Kappa Phi alumni (Delta Epsilon chapter, Jacksonville State, Alabama), was also instrumental in the early organization of the colony.
Recruitment was the major goal of the colony, but also high on the list of priorities was recognition with the Greek system at K-State. They achieved this by participating in as many inter-Greek events as possible including intramurals, Greek Week, and the Greek leaders retreat.
In order to fulfill IFC requirements, a house had to be obtained for the colony. Several locations were considered, but the house at 421 N. 16 th was decided upon, and nine of the colony's eighteen members set up residence.
By the fall of 1977 the colony had grown to 28 members and these men immediately went to work. They continued to participate with other Greek houses in intramurals and other events and also formed a little sister's organization, which became a great asset to the colony.
Community service became a part of the colony's activities in the fall of 1977. Among the projects were Trick-or-Treat of UNICEF, Aggieville Merchants Support the Band, and Green Survival Week. This work helped to expose the fraternities name to the community as well as to the Greek system.
The colony continued to grow in the fall of 1978 and the priorities of the colony turned to fulfilling and requirements needed for chartering. On April 15, 1978, all the hard work paid off when thirty-nine men were initiated into Pi Kappa Phi and chapter designation of Delta Chi chapter was given to the Kansas State colony. The original seven members of our chapter will always be greatly respected by the members of this chapter because of their hard work and determination.
