Feed the Future Innovation Lab for the Reduction of Post-Harvest Loss

Ghana

The amount of grain stored in warehouses in Ghana is rapidly increasing. A number of private and public sector organizations have formed Post-Harvest Service Centers (PSC) whose key goal is to improve agricultural production and food quality and reduce post-harvest loss (PHL). Virtually all grain held by PSC is stored in warehouses. As a result of PSC, greater increase in agricultural production is expected in coming years.

Most storage warehouses in Ghana do not give protection to maize from insects, mites, rodents, atmospheric moisture, and heat. There has been a considerable amount of research and development on pest management programs for the food industry that could be drawn from and applied to reduce PHL in Ghanaian warehouses. Thus, there is great potential for the adoption of economically feasible and culturally acceptable improved storage methods.
