GAS TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE

Brief
Description:
The facility at the Gas Technology
Institute, des Plaines, Illinois,
includes an indoor test pit for evaluating construction procedures and for
testing various configurations of pavement sections in environmentally
controlled conditions. The pavement section is instrumented and constructed over
utility pipes to monitor and evaluate pavement cutting and restoration
practices. There is also an outdoor test section, part of GTI’s “Pipe Farm,” an
outdoor research center consisting of test pipes constructed in various soils
over a controlled-drainage stone layer to provide uniform soil properties in
each section of the center. The
accelerated pavement loading system (APLS) applies full-scale traffic loads on
the pavement sections in the indoor and outdoor testing facilities. The loading
machine allows for estimating the long-term performance of pavements based on
short-duration tests.
