CLASS PRODUCES WEBZINE ON KANSAS DELICACIES
Chock full of recipes, stories about restaurants, blogs, book reviews, and more, the Kansas Food Journal is a webzine produced by students from Jane P. Marshall’s Food Writing course in the Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics. Students produced more than 50 stories on topics that include a Wichita chocolatier, 1950s drive-ins in Topeka and Oakley, Kansas tea shops, and an Oldsburg couple raising purebred Duroc hogs and how the meat is wowing chefs nationwide. One blogger takes you on a culinary journey outside the state to the East Coast.
Two local stories focus on the memories K-State students have made at THE Bakery, located inside the Derby Dining Center on campus, and Vista Drive-In in Manhattan, a gathering place for K-State fans since 1964.

CAMPUS RESOURCES CREATE UNIVERSITY LIFE CAFÉ
A website that helps students balance their personal and academic life, access self-assessments, watch videos about real-life experiences, and more was collaborated on by many campus offices, students, and faculty. University life café allows students and professionals to communicate and load content about personal well being, including art, photos, stories, and experiences.
The site, coordinated by K-State’s Counseling Services, was named by the American College Personnel Association as one of the Top 10 Innovations in College Counseling for 2009-2010.

FACULTY LEAD STUDY ABROAD SUMMER TOURS
France, Spain, Morocco, and Northern India are some of the faraway destinations where K-State faculty and students roamed this summer. Topics of study included photography, the Brazilian Rain Forest, horses, language and culture, and African agriculture, just to name a few.

CLOTHING DISTRIBUTED TO CAREER-MINDED STUDENTS
Career Closet, sponsored by K-State’s Career and Employment Services, is now accepting donations of gently used professional clothing for the second year. Whether the clothing is for an interview or career fair, or even to be worn at that first full-time job, students can try on clothes and seek advice from apparel students.

CELL PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING IS BANNED
July 1 marks the day Manhattan implemented a new law banning cell phone use, both talking on the phone and texting, something you’ll need to alert your student to before heading to Manhattan this fall. The Riley County Police Department will issue written warnings until January 1, 2011, when drivers using a cell phone will be issued a fine.
And there’s a K-State connection to a state campaign to remind drivers not to text while driving.
Brian Bookwalter, a master’s degree student in fine arts, designed posters and a website with anti-texting messages on them for his thesis project. That project, which focused on how texting emoticons and Web speak could communicate a message to the public, turned into a campaign for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

ALCOHOL EDUCATION PROGRAM BEGINS THIS SUMMER
AlcoholEdu, an online alcohol education program, is now required for many newly enrolled students. The intent of the two-part program is to encourage students to make healthy decisions in college, improve their chance for success, and keep them and the people around them safer.
