All salaries which are reported in the survey are based on a 9-10 month academic year salary. Any compensation for summer academic work, fringe benefits or perquisites is not included in the salary data.
The average salary is based on the survey information with the assumption that all employees are full time.

This represents the percent of faculty in a given discipline/major field who hold a given academic rank. For example: A FAC MIX factor of 36.4% for associate professor implies that 36 percent of the faculty in that discipline/major field hold the rank of associate professor.
The salary factor represents for a given rank of a given discipline/major field the ratio of the average salary to the total average salary of all institutions. For example: A Salary Factor of 0.96 for assistant professors of mathematics implies that the average salary for assistant professor of mathematics is 96 percent of the average salary of all assistant professors of all institutions.
The number of faculty members whose salary was included to compute the average salary.
The number of institutions which have reported salary data for a given academic rank and discipline/major field.

The collection of assistant professors who were hired for the first time in the fall of 2000. All information for this group was included in the ASST PROF rank for reporting purposes. Thus, new assistant professor information is not combined in the ALL RANKS information, i.e., notice the FAC MIX is not included as part of the total. This category is used mainly for new hiring information. All information and calculations are correct when comparing NEW ASST PROF to each another, but as a separate group they do not compose part of the ALL RANKS.
The collection of professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and instructors as a group.
Major category of disciplines - The CIP is structured so that disciplines are grouped into major categories. For example, Foreign Languages is a major category composed of the various languages: French, German, Spanish, etc. Thus, Section A has all disciplines grouped into major categories and presents the salary information as such categories.
Salaries by discipline - Each CIP code for which data was received from at least three institutions is presented. Health profession disciplines are excluded.
Salaries by discipline - Health Professions only.
