Kansas State University (www.k-state.edu), a distinguished public university renowned for the excellence of its faculty, students, staff, academic programs, and research, invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Senior Vice President.  The next Provost and Senior Vice President of K-State will begin in an exciting era of the university in that he/she will join the new president and build upon a great legacy.

With enrollment of more than 23,000, K-State is America's first designated land-grant university and consistently ranks among America's best-value institutions.  A university-wide commitment to putting students first has attracted scholars from all 50 states and more than 90 countries who pursue degrees in more than 250 undergraduate majors and options, 65 masters programs, 45 doctoral programs, and 22 graduate certificates in nine academic colleges. The percentage of alumni who belong to the Alumni Association is among the highest in the nation.

K-State is ranked first nationally among public universities in the number of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall scholars in the last two decades.  Total research expenditures approach $220 million, of which more than half is competitive extramural awards. Featuring a full portfolio of world-class programs, K-State is a global leader in agricultural biotechnology and is the premier source of food safety research and training programs and development of state-of-the-art diagnostic tools.  Co-curricular offerings are diverse and abundant, including competing in the Big 12 athletic conference. 

The main K-State campus is located in Manhattan, Kansas (www.manhattan.org), a classic college town known as the "Little Apple" for its vibrant atmosphere and exceptional quality of life.  An unmatched level of town-gown collaboration is the model other university communities seek to emulate.   The K-State Salina campus is the home of the College of Technology and Aviation (www.salina.k-state.edu) and is nationally known for high quality programs, such as its Professional Pilot program, which boasts more Master Certified Flight Instructors than any other institution in the U.S.  The new Olathe Innovation campus (www.kstateoic.ksu.edu) will be K-State's academic research portal in the Kansas City Bioscience Park.

The Provost and Senior Vice President is the chief academic officer for the university and serves as a member of the executive administration.  He/She serves as a representative of the President and in place of the President in his absence.  The Provost and Senior Vice President develops university policy in a culture of shared governance and works with a university budget exceeding $730 million.

The Provost and Senior Vice President must have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in a field of specialty from an accredited university and qualify through research, teaching or extension for a full professorship with tenure in one of 64 academic departments of the university.  He/She must have a record of increasingly responsible administrative posts in a university or comparable institution and have sustained a successful career as an academic dean or in a similar academic position.  The Provost and Senior Vice President must have a demonstrated commitment to the land-grant mission of the university, including the promotion of diversity among students, faculty, staff, and in the curriculum.  We also expect the next Provost and Senior Vice President to share the values and culture of the university, which includes a true concern for a diverse student population, a love of teaching and a strong commitment to research.

The Provost and Senior Vice President should provide visionary leadership that encompasses a deep understanding of the changing nature of higher education, the strategic use of technology, and a comprehension of the diverse activities and roles of a modern land-grant university in a transforming demographic region. He/she must provide effective leadership in teaching, research, extension and engagement, while fostering partnerships with other institutions and agencies. The Provost and Senior Vice President must have an appreciation of the nature of the Kansas economy and the role of agriculture. The Provost and Senior Vice President must work effectively with government agencies and industry to ensure that K-State plays a leading role in the economic development of the state and region. The Provost and Senior Vice President serves as a strong advocate for the University at the Kansas Board of Regents and with state and federal governments. We also expect the Provost and Senior Vice President to have an appreciation for the importance of private fundraising and a demonstrated track record as a fundraiser.

Review of applications begins Tuesday, August 18, 2009, and will continue until the position is filled, which is expected by January 1, 2010.
