    14-1 DEPSCoR Competition (DOD)

    The Department of Defense has announced its FY 97 Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR). Research projects are open to all technical topics listed in the Broad Agency Announcements of the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. Proposals should be for new, not continuation funding. Proposals that involve a number of investigators must be fully integrated to address one focused technical issue of interest to DOD. Proposals must meet the objective of making Kansas more competitive for DoD funding. For current information, consult the Kansas Defense 2000 web page http://www.ksu.edu/chem/DEPSCoR/

    14-2 Research on the Origins and Pathways to Drug Abuse (NIH)

    This program announcement encourages research exploring the origins of and pathways to drug abuse. Of particular interest are multidisciplinary, integrative and developmental approaches. A keen understanding of the factors and processes that predispose and protect an individual from drug abuse from initial use through different stages of drug involvement is essential to the successful prevention and treatment of drug abuse. Investigators from diverse scientific disciplines are encouraged to apply either individually (e.g. as individual projects) or collectively (e.g. as a program project). Research is needed to determine the interactions and cumulative impact of factors from the various potential stages of drug involvement (initiation, escalation, resistance to drug involvement and escalation, continuation, discontinuation, relapse and recovery of drug abuse and dependence).     14-3 Avionics Collaborative Engineering Technology (DOD)

    The contractor shall develop and implement technologies and methodologies to bring multi-disciplinary engineering to a laboratory environment in support of avionics technology development. The tools and standards needed to permit sharing of data in a multi-user development environment shall be developed. The contractor shall consider the problems associated with allowing various existing engineering design tools, real-time and non real-time simulations, software development tools, and visualization packages to interoperate within an intranet across PCs, workstations, servers, supercomputers, and massive parallel processors. The contractor shall develop methodologies to implement collaborative virtual prototyping across the engineering disciplines within the Avionics Directorate and in the context of the collaborative engineering environment. The contractor shall conduct research into advanced distributed simulation concepts. The contractor shall propose solutions that allow geographically dispersed, remotely located simulations to interoperate. The goal of the research shall be platform and language independence.     14-4 Scientific Investigations for NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) (NASA)

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announces the solicitation of proposals for scientific investigations and activities in support of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) Program that will qualify and/or improve the accuracy of geophysical measurements derived from current satellite observations and from the initial Earth Observing Systems (EOS) satellite sensors. Two types of proposals are requested by this announcement. NASA's `Global Data Integration and Validation Program', and MTPE Research and Analysis (R&A) Program is requesting proposals to determine the geophysical measurement accuracies of data from current or historical research and operational satellite sensors; to conduct studies of the time and space variability of the derived geophysical parameters including uncertainties; and to analyze the impacts of these uncertainties on subsequent interpretations and application (Type 1). NASA's EOS Program requests proposals for investigations and activities that will enhance, supplement and/or complement activities planned by the EOS Instrument and Interdisciplinary Science Teams to characterize and validate the accuracy of remotely-sensed geophysical parameters derived by the Instrument Science Teams from measurements by EOS satellite sensors in the AM-1 time frame (Type 2).     14-5 Thermally Conductive Polymers (DOD)

    The objective of this effort is to initiate development of inherently thermally conductive polymers for use in aerospace composites. This program shall identify factors that effect thermal conductivity in polymers and composites and shall investigate innovative ways to exploit those factors. Candidate materials shall be developed and tested at the coupon level for thermal, mechanical, and other properties (with the emphasis on thermal conductivity). The thermal conductivity goal is 50 W/mK. (PRDA 97-36-MLK)

    14-6 Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (DOD)

    The Department of Defense announces the FY 1998 competition for funding for the Multidisciplinary Research Programs (MURI). MURI supports research teams whose efforts intersect more than one traditional science and engineering discipline. Proposals must focus on one of the following 13 areas of interest: Engineering of Nanostructures and Devices; Computational Tools for Design, Analysis and Optimization of Nanometer Scale Devices and Operation; Nanoscience: Size and Distribution Control of Self-Assembled Semiconductor Nanostructures for Multispectral Detector Arrays; Nanoelectronics: Low Power, High Performance Components and Circuits; Carbon Clusters and Nanotubes; Olfactory Sensing; Adaptive Optoelectronic Eye; Biological Detection Systems for Electromagnetic Spectral Signatures; Biomimetic Robotics; Micro Thermal Engines; Explosive-Driven Power Generation for Directed-Energy Munitions; Compact Power Sources: Heterojunction Power Switching; Digital Communication Devices Based on Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos.     14-7 Aspergillosis, Ehrlichioses and Drug Resistance (NIH)

    The purpose of this program announcement (PA) is to stimulate research on selected topics in three separate areas: aspergillosis, the ehrlichioses, and antibacterial or antifungal drug resistance. For aspergillosis, the goal is to support research on clinically relevant aspects of Aspergillus fumigatus and/or A. flavus. For the ehrlichioses, the goal is to support investigations on the diagnosis and pathogenesis of the agents of human ehrlichioses. For drug resistance, the goal is to support research projects elucidating the molecular biology and molecular epidemiology of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in health care associated bacteria and fungi, including the molecular mechanisms of acquisition, expression, maintenance, and dissemination of resistance genes. Specific organisms of interest include but are not limited to: vancomycin-resistant pneumococci, Gram negative bacteria and the fungi of greatest significance in the nosocomial setting.     14-8 Immunologic Intervention in Infectious Diseases (NIH)

    The National institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites applications for innovative preclinical and clinical research, in relevant animal models and human subjects, to identify and accelerate development of novel, immunologically-based, therapeutic interventions for infectious diseases, such as interventions based on targeted disruption of the contribution of cytokines to pathology in such diseases. Multidisciplinary research and a focus on studies in human populations are particularly encouraged. Since other NIAID initiatives have recently been available to support research on other high priority areas such as HIV, opportunistic infections in AIDS patients, Lyme disease, and tuberculosis, projects on these topics will not be considered responsive to this PA.     14-9 Linking Environmental Agents, Oxidative Damage and Disease (NIH)

    The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) supports research to dientify the role of environmental agents in perturbations of normal physiologic processes leading to human dysfunction and disease of all types. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) supports research to investigate the pathologic mechanisms in acute and chronic pulmonary diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. The goals of this request for applications (RFA) are to encourage research to develop biomarkers of oxidative damage and to focus on the oxidative stress mechanism as a result of exposure to injurious agents and the etiology, initiation or exacerbation of human disease including direct or indirect roles for reactive oxygen species in pulmonary and cardiovascular disease. It is anticipated that research projects generated as a result of this RFA will stimulate scientists to explore oxidative damage as a critical pathway in pulmonary and cardiovascular disease as well as diseases induced by environmental agents in order to develop hypothesis-based research needed to establish cause and effect relationships.     14-10 Spinal Cord Injury: Emerging Concepts (NIH)

    The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) invite applications for support of research that will increase our knowledge of the mechanisms that underlie processes of injury and repair in the central nervous system (CNS), including optic nerve and other CNS tracts, and that will provide strategies for therapeutic intervention in spinal cord injury.     14-11 Role of Tobacco Dependence in Alcoholism Treatment (NIH)

    The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse of Alcoholism (NIAAA) is seeking research grant applications to study the alcohol tobacco interaction in its implications for alcoholism treatment. The objective of this program announcement is to encourage research that will lead to improved strategies for treating alcohol and nicotine dependence in patients receiving care for problem drinking. Such research may identify and test relevant clinical intervention strategies; identify interactions between the two substances that have implications for relapse prevention, or further understanding of the alcoholism treatment process by investigating reinforcement mechanisms underlying conjoint abuse of the two substances.     14-12 ILSI N.A. Future Leader Awards (ILSI)

    The North American Branch of the International LIfe Sciences Institute (ILSI N.A.) is soliciting nominations of persons to be considered as recipients of its 1998/99 Future Leader Awards. These awards, given to promising nutrition and food scientists, allow young investigators the opportunity to conduct exploratory research that might not receive funding from other sources. Consideration will be given to individuals proposing research in the areas of experimental nutrition, nutrition and toxicology, and nutrition and food science.

    14-13 American Heart Association Grants (AHA)

    Applications are available for American Heart Association Grants. Scientist Development Grants support highly promising beginning scientists in their progress toward independence by encouraging and adequately funding research projects that can serve to bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator. No more than 4 years should have elapsed since an applicant's first faculty/staff appointment. The Established Investigator Grant is for Assistant or Associate Professors with at least 4 years but no more than 9 years since the first faculty appointment. Grant-in-Aid awards fund the most innovative and meritorious research projects from independent investigators.

    14-14 Behavioral Science Track Awards for Rapid Transition (NIH)

    The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites newly independent investigators to submit applications for small-scale, exploratory research projects related to NIDA's behavioral sciences mission. The Behavioral Science Track Award for Rapid Transition will provide rapid review and funding decisions of applications. Experimentally-based research applications are encouraged across a wide variety of behavioral factors in drug abuse, including neurocognitive, cognitive and perceptual processes, psychosocial, and more broadly motivational, social and community factors in drug abuse. Given the role that drug abuse plays in HIV/AIDS transmission, studies applying basic behavioral science models and methods to address this issue are especially encouraged.
