    43-1 Research in Learning and Intelligent Systems (NSF)

    The National Science Foundation announces an opportunity for interdisciplinary research in Learning and Intelligent Systems (LIS). The LIS initiative seeks to stimulate interdisciplinary research that will unify experimentally and theoretically derived concepts related to learning and intelligent systems, and that will promote the use and development of information technologies in learning across a wide variety of fields. The long-range goal of this initiative is very broad and has the potential to make significant contributions toward innovative applications. Consequently, development of new scientific knowledge on learning and intelligent systems and its creative applications to education and to learning technologies are integral parts of this solicitation.     43-2 Dynamics of Diffusion (Annenberg Scholars Program)

    The Annenberg Scholars Program for 1997 (Fall Semester only) invites proposals for research on the dynamics of diffusion implicit in one or more disciplines in the humanities, social and biological sciences, and medical epidemiology. The aim is to examine how ideas, behavior or institutional practices diffuse within and across societies. Topics might range from the history of religions to health behavior, from stylistic change in fashion and the arts to technology transfer across cultures. Scholars are offered a stipend of $30,000 for the Fall Semester (September-December 1997), and are expected to reside in the Philadelphia area during their appointment to the school. Scholars participate in the Program's weekly seminar, and prepare a paper or monograph.

    43-3 Open Studio: the Arts Online (NEA)

    The National Endowment for the Arts & the Benton Foundation are sponsoring two competitions to meet the objectives of Open Studio, an effort to expand the presence of, and audience for, the arts & culture on the Internet. Public access points to the Internet will be set up in arts organizations and culturally-oriented community centers across the country. Through these Access Grants, members of the public can receive personal assistance in browsing the Web and accessing its cultural resources. Ten institutions with existing telecommunications resources--such as libraries, universities, and community telecommunications centers--will receive Mentor Grants to teach 10 organizations & 10 artists how to become effective information providers on the World Wide Web.

    43-4 1997 Governor's Arts Awards (KAC)

    The 1997 Governor's Arts Awards will recognize outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, and support or availability of the arts in Kansas. The Awards focus attention on the importance of the arts to the quality of life in Kansas by honoring those who have made outstanding creative achievements or significant contributions to cultural growth or development. Nominations are accepted from Kansas citizens and organizations seeking to recognize individual artists, including the visual, performing, literary, folk and media, and art educators, advocates, organizations, individual patrons and patron organizations.

    43-5 Educational Testing Service Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (ETS)

    Up to three fellows will be selected to conduct their own research in Princeton, New Jersey, in one of the following areas: psychology; education; sociology of education; psychometrics; statistics; computer science; linguistics; educational, occupational, or vocational testing; educational technology; minority issues; testing issues, including alternate forms of assessment for special populations; testing issues associated with new forms of assessment; or policy research.

    43-6 Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research Program (DOE)

    The Office of Health and Environmental Research of the Office of Energy Research, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), hereby announces its interest in receiving applications for research grants in the Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research (NABIR) Program. The NABIR Program is made up of the following scientific research elements: Acceleration; Assessment; Biogeochemical Dynamics; Biomolecular Science and Engineering; Biotransformation and Biodegradation; Community Dynamics and Microbial Ecology. The NABIR program also includes a social-legal element called Bioremediation and its Social Implications and Concerns (BASIC).

    43-7 Advanced Microelectronics (DOD)

    The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting research proposals in the area of advanced microelectronics technologies. The goal of this program is to revolutionize semiconductor integrated circuits through the research of innovative processes, materials, and manufacturing techniques. The objective of the DARPA Advanced Microelectronics Program is to revolutionize and accelerate the progress towards future semiconductor generations. Technology approaches that involve many layers of active devices as well as features in the size range of 25nm and below are of greatest interest. Also of interest are high throughput patterning technologies that simplify processes by eliminating masks or by minimizing or elimination resists and resist processing. BAA 97-07

    43-8 Environmental Education (EPA)

    The Environmental Protection Agency will fund projects to design, demonstrate or disseminate practices, methods or techniques for environmental education. The goal of environmental education is to increase public awareness and knowledge and environmental issues, and to provide the public with the skills needed to make informed decisions and to take responsible actions.     43-9 Innovative Approaches to Developing New Technologies (NIH)

    The mission of the Biomedical Technology area of the NCRR is to support research to identify, create and develop innovative technologies and to provide these technologies for biomedical research. Areas of emphasis are biomedical engineering, biomedical computing, and technologies for the study of structure and function at all levels of living systems. The purpose of this program announcement is to encourage submission of new Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) applications to explore new research paradigms in engineering, instrumentation, physics, mathematics or computer science as applied to biomedical research. The projects should provide the opportunity to develop new technologies, methods, devices, and materials that provide greater understanding of fundamental elements of biological phenomena.     43-10 Environmental Management Science Program (DOE)

    The Offices of Energy Research (ER) and Environmental Management (EM), U.S. Department of Energy, hereby announce their interest in receiving grant applications for performance of innovative fundamental research to support the management and disposal of DOE radioactive, hazardous chemical, and mixed wastes; the stabilization of nuclear materials and spent nuclear fuel; remediation of contaminated sites; and the decontamination and decommissioning of facilities. Proposed basic research under this notice should contribute to environmental management activities that would decrease risk for the public and workers, provide opportunities for major cost reductions, reduce time required to achieve EM's mission goals, and, in general, should address problems that are considered intractable without new knowledge.     43-11 Community Policing (DOJ)

    Grants to provide comprehensive and innovative education, training and technical assistance to Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grantees through regional institutes are available from the U.S. Department of Justice. Partnerships, preferably with more than one partner, are encouraged. For example, if the applicant is a college, it must partner with local law enforcement agencies and a nonprofit organization. Institutes should facilitate an infusion of community policing principles into all forms of police training and also apply the principles of adult learning to all training and professional development.

    43-12 Soros Justice Fellowships (Open Society)

    The Center on Crime, Communities & Culture, a grantmaking and research program of the Open Society Institute-New York, invites applications for the newly established Soros Justice Fellowships. Post Graduate Fellowships will be awarded to individuals to develop, in collaboration with existing criminal justice organizations in the U.S. or overseas, innovative and effective programs related to criminal justice. Applicants must secure the sponsorship of a nonprofit organization or government agency whose mission, goals or philosophy is related to the field of criminal justice. Eligible applicants will be in their final year of graduate school or will have graduated within the last six years from a graduate program in one of the following areas of study: arts, business, communications and media, economics, education, ethnic and minority studies, government, history, journalism, law, medicine, ministry, psychology, public health, public policy or management, sociology, social work, urban studies, or women's studies. Senior Fellowships will be awarded to experienced, highly-qualified professionals in criminal justice or related fields to work independently on research projects or studies in the U.S. or overseas.

    43-13 Schomburg Scholars in Residence (Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture)

    The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture announces its Scholars-in-Residence Program for the academic year of 1997-98. The residency program assists those scholars and professionals whose research in the black experience can benefit from extended research in the Center's collection. The Fellowship Program encompasses projects in African, Afro-American, and Afro-Caribbean history and culture. The program is also open to professionals in fields related to the Schomburg Center's collections and program activities--librarianship, archives and museum administration, special collections, photographs, audiovisual material, and publications. Studies in the social sciences, the arts, science and technology, psychology, education, and religion are eligible if they utilize a humanistic approach and contribute to humanistic knowledge. Fellows are required to be in full-time residence at the Schomburg Center during the period of the award.

    43-14 1997 Graduate International Fellowships Competition (AED)

    National Security Education Program (NSEP) Graduate International Fellowships enable outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an important international dimension to their education. NSEP funds students pursuing study of languages, cultures, and world regions other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. NSEP fellowships are intended to provide support to U.S. graduate students who will pursue the study of languages and cultures deemed critical to U.S. national security.

    43-15 Doctoral Research for Navy (ONR)

    Up to four fellowships are available to social science doctoral candidates whose dissertations will contribute to improved understanding of determinants of the readiness of U.S. naval forces. Preference will go to dissertations involving the analyses of actual naval readiness data. The work must involve interaction with an academic, Navy or Marine Corps researcher who is actively engaged in research on some aspect of the naval readiness problem. Candidates must be within two years of formally submitting dissertations to their institutions of higher education. (BAA 97-004)
