Ten international research funders announced today their joint participation in round three of the Digging into Data Challenge (DiD), a grant competition designed to spur computationally intensive research in the social sciences and humanities.This third round of the challenge aims to address how Big Data changes the research landscape for the humanities and social sciences by asking what Big Data means for researchers in these disciplines. Science now faces new research opportunities made possible by the unprecedented terabytes and petabytes of digitized data created by virtue of everyday technology or collected through conversion of analog data from the past. Data mining has arrived for the humanities and social sciences, yielding myriad opportunities to ask research questions about human history, society and social phenomena that could never have been realistically entertained before--and research funders want scholars and applicants to ask those questions with an emphasis on new, computationally-based research methods that would be used to address them. Applicants will form international teams from at least two of the participating countries. Winning teams will receive grants from two or more of the funding agencies and, two years later, will be invited to show off their work at a special conference sponsored by the ten funders.
The goal of the Dimensions of Biodiversity campaign is to transform, by 2020, how we describe and understand the scope and role of life on Earth. The campaign promotes novel, integrated approaches to identify and understand the evolutionary and ecological significance of biodiversity amidst the changing environment of the present day and in the geologic past. Dimensions of Biodiversity FY2013 again includes a partnership with NASA. The partnership will support the use of satellite remote sensing as a tool to address research questions that integrate the genetic, taxonomic/phylogenetic, and functional dimensions of biodiversity. The Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces its interest in receiving applications for research that supports the Genomic Science research program. In this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), applications are solicited for: i) systems biology studies on regulatory and metabolic networks of microbes, microbial consortia, and microbe-plant interactions involved in biogeochemical cycling of carbon, ii) development of omics approaches to investigate microbial community functional processes involved in carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, and iii) development of omics enabled methods and technologies for imaging and analysis of microbially-mediated carbon cycling processes in terrestrial ecosystems. The National Energy Technology Laboratory University Turbine Systems Research (NETL-UTSR) program manages a portfolio of gas turbine-focused university projects. This NETL-UTSR program announcement supports the Office of Fossil Energy's Advanced Turbines program goals and the Department of Energy (DOE) strategic goals and program mission needs. The Sunflower Foundation invites proposals for its Sunflower Trails program, a longstanding foundation program designed to help communities and schools promote healthy living for Kansans of all ages. The Sunflower Trails program provides grants for construction, expansion and enhancement of community- and school-based trails as a way of supporting the concept of a built environment; that is, a living space where the healthy choice is the easy choice. The goal of the Sunflower Trails program is to help communities and schools create safe and accessible places for people to connect to physical activity, a healthier lifestyle, the great outdoors and each other.
The purpose of the NIH Summer Research Experience Program is to provide a high quality research experience for high school and college students and for science teachers during the summer academic break. The NIH expects that such programs will: help attract young students to careers in science; provide opportunities for college students to gain valuable research experience to help prepare them for graduate school; and enhance the skills of science teachers and enable them to more effectively communicate the nature of the scientific process to their students. The programs would also contribute to enhancing overall science literacy. Summer Research Programs that expand and complement existing summer educational and training programs are encouraged. The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation is to support research that will prevent, treat and cure canine disease. In line with this mission, the Canine Athlete Initiative was founded to advance high-quality basic, translational, and clinical biomedical research to support the health, well-being, and performance of all canine athletes.The intent of the Research Program associated with the Canine Athlete Initiative is to support both basic and clinical research that pertains to the specific needs of canine athletes and working dogs. Basic research can involve a wide variety of scientific disciplines, including immunology, genetics, molecular biology, structural biology, metabolism, infectious disease and pharmacology as they pertain to the canine athlete; however, basic science applications must have a fully defined translational endpoint in order to be considered responsive to this RFP.
5-8 United States Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences Broad Agency Announcement for Basic, Applied, and Advanced Scientific Research (DoD)
The US Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences is the Army's lead agency for the conduct of research, development, and analyses for the improvement of Army readiness and performance via research advances and applications of the behavioral and social sciences that address personnel, organization, training, and leader development issues. Programs funded under this BAA include basic research, applied research, and advanced technology development that can improve human performance and Army readiness. The funding opportunity is divided into two sections- 1) Basic Research and 2) Applied Research and Advanced Technology Development. The four major topic areas of research interest include the following: 1) Training; 2) Leader Development; 3) Team and Inter-Organizational Performance in Complex Environments; and 4) Solider/Personnel Issues. NIJ seeks proposals for research that will explore the impact of the current state of social media technology on police practices and outcomes. Although social media technology is now ubiquitous in our society and particularly within law enforcement agencies, it is unclear how this technology is being used by departments, both officially and unofficially, and how this use has translated into public safety outcomes. NIJ seeks proposals for social and behavioral science research on, and evaluations related to, justice systems topics relevant to State, local, tribal, or Federal criminal and juvenile justice policy and practice. 5-13 Awards for Graduate Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows for Cancer-Relevant Research and Travel (K-State)
The Johnson Cancer Research Center at K-State supports students and post-doctoral fellows of center-affiliated faculty researchers. Graduate students and post-docs are eligible for Summer Stipends and Travel Awards to present at professional meetings. Applications must be submitted by faculty mentors. Applications for the undergraduate student Cancer Research Award mentoring program are accepted during the fall semester only.
