This program, described in Issue 35, Number 2 of the Funding Bulletin, allows only one submission per region per applicant (although applicants may apply for other regions). The internal deadline for our region applications is October 8, 2011.
Sustainable Energy Pathways is part of the NSF-wide initiative on Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES). The Sustainable Energy Pathways solicitation calls for innovative, interdisciplinary basic research in science, engineering, and education by teams of researchers for developing systems approaches to sustainable energy pathways based on a comprehensive understanding of the scientific, technical, environmental, economic, and societal issues. The SEP solicitation considers scalable approaches for sustainable energy conversion to useful forms, as well as its storage, transmission, distribution, and use. The following Topic Areas illustrate the broad scope of sustainable energy interest areas of this solicitation: Energy Harvesting & Conversion from Renewable Resources; Sustainable Energy Storage Solutions; Critical Elements & Materials for Sustainable Energy; Nature-Inspired Processes for Sustainable Energy Solutions; Reducing Carbon Intensity from Energy Conversion & Use; Sustainable Energy Transmission & Distribution; Energy Efficiency & Management. A minimum of three investigators is required, the Principal Investigator (PI) and two or more co-PIs from the lead or participating institutions who are eligible to serve as PI or co-PI on NSF proposals submitted through their respective institutions. These investigators should represent more than one scientific discipline in order to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to sustainable energy. The American-Scandinavian Foundation invites U.S. colleges and universities to apply for funding to host a visiting lecturer from Norway or Sweden. The awards are for appointments of one semester, and should fall within the 2012-2013 academic year. Lectureships should be in the area of contemporary studies with an emphasis on one of five areas: Public Policy; Conflict Resolution; Environmental Studies; Multiculturalism; and Healthcare. The award is appropriate not just for Scandinavian studies departments, but for any department or inter-disciplinary program with an interest in incorporating a Scandinavian focus into its course offering.

The Center of Theological Inquiry is an independent research institution in Princeton, New Jersey, with a visiting scholar program. With support from the John Templeton Foundation, the center is convening an interdisciplinary team of theologians and scientists to address questions of nature and nurture raised by the biological evolution of human beings. The program welcomes proposals to explore how new research in evolutionary biology, psychology, and anthropology is challenging and changing the understanding of human nature and development, not least in relation to religion and theological accounts of the human condition. The program's field of inquiry encompasses these evolutionary and human sciences, theological anthropology, practical theology, psychology of religion, religious studies, and the history and philosophy of science. Scholarly Editions and Translations grants support the preparation of editions and translations of pre-existing texts and documents that are currently inaccessible or available in inadequate editions. These grants support full-time or part-time activities for periods of a minimum of one year up to a maximum of three years. Projects must be undertaken by a team of at least one editor or translator and one other staff member. Collaborative Research Grants support interpretive research undertaken by a team of two or more scholars, for full-time or part-time activities for periods of a minimum of one year up to a maximum of three years. Support is available for various combinations of scholars, consultants, and research assistants; project-related travel; field work; applications of information technology; and technical support and services. This award supports Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty researchers traveling to laboratories domestically or internationally to acquire new research techniques, facilitate or begin collaborations, or attend courses. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or are studying for a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering and are interested in investigating research opportunities in the biological sciences.
NSF has established the Software Infrastructure for Sustained Innovation (SI2) program with the overarching goal of transforming innovations in research and education into sustained software resources that are an integral part of the cyberinfrastructure. The SI2 program includes three classes of awards: 1) Scientific Software Elements (SSE); 2) Scientific Software Integration (SSI); and 3) Scientific Software Innovation Institutes (S212). This solicitation is focused on the Scientific Software Innovation Institutes (S2I2) class of awards. Two subclasses of awards are planned for the S2I2 part of this program: Conceptualization Awards, which are planning awards aimed at organizing an interdisciplinary community and understanding their software requirements and challenges, and Implementation Awards, which will be made to implement community plans for software infrastructure, such as those developed by the conceptualization awards. 37-10 Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing: Scientific Computation Application Partnerships in Earth System Science (DOE)
The Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) and the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces its interest in receiving collaborative applications to the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program for SciDAC Scientific Computation Application Partnerships in Earth System Science in support of the Office of Biological and Environmental Research's Earth System Modeling research. Applications in response to this FOA may focus on improving climate system models or their components to make them more accurate and computationally efficient. This may include improved or new process representation of the model physical and biogeochemical components, or numerical formulations for high resolution modeling. Examples could include development of components or development of scale-aware parameterizations for atmospheric, oceanic, terrestrial or cryospheric systems. High-resolution formulations could include unstructured or adaptive grids, or other innovative techniques for resolving convection/eddy dynamics. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks projects for rapid and sensitive detection of infectious agents as a key requirement for microbial identification in laboratory animal models. The diagnosis of polymicrobial infections has become increasingly important in enabling biological resource centers to meet the needs for establishing pathogen-free biological resources for current and future biomedical research needs. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages applications from small business concerns for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects that propose innovative research in the areas of detection and identification of infectious agents, including those involved in vertical transmission of diseases into embryos and larvae and development of required reagents and equipment. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the NIH Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences Opportunity Network (OppNet) solicits Research Project grant (R01) applications from institutions and organizations that propose to investigate basic psychological, social, and environmental mechanisms and processes linking psychosocial stressors and behavior. This FOA will facilitate investigation of multiple and potentially bidirectional pathways underlying the behavioral, environmental, and psychosocial link(s) between psychosocial stressors and behaviors that may ultimately impact biological function, health, and disease. Applicants are encouraged to use innovative and integrative designs to elucidate how psychological, social, and psychosocial environmental factors impact the processes by which stressors become coupled with and influenced by behaviors. Applications examining moderating factors such as individual demographic (age, gender/sex, ethnicity) and psychological (vulnerabilities, resilience) differences, risk factors, timing of exposure to stressors, and environments are desirable.
