Limited submission programs have sponsor restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted by a single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which applications will be submitted. 35-1 Validation and Field Testing of New Tools for Characterizing the Personal Environment [R01] (NIH)

This FOA solicits applications to conduct field testing and initial validation of existing prototype tools for characterizing the personal environment including chemical exposures, diet, physical activity, psychosocial stress and the use of addicting substances. Applicants must have a functional prototype which has been validated under controlled (i.e., laboratory) conditions and partner with an ongoing human subjects research study with existing reference measures to assess the validity and usability of the prototype as well as the additional scientific impact of the exposure metric. This FOA will utilize the R01 award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-ES-10-008, that encourages applications to pilot test novel candidate biomarkers and technologies that measure biological responses to chemical toxicants and other environmental stressors. 35-2 Validation and Field Testing of Novel Biomarkers of Response to Environmental Stressors (R01) (NIH)

This FOA solicits grant applications from institutions/organizations to conduct pilot testing of novel candidate biomarkers and technologies that measure biological responses to chemical toxicants and other environmental stressors. Through collaboration with existing human population studies, investigators will conduct a rigorous evaluation of the performance of novel biomarkers and technologies under a range of exposure levels and collection and storage conditions, to establish the potential and feasibility of applying these novel approaches to large-scale epidemiology and gene-environment studies. This FOA will utilize the R01 award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-ES-10-007, that encourages applications to pilot test and validate new tools for measuring exposure to chemical and lifestyle stressors. 35-3 Economics of Prevention (R21) (NIH)

This FOA solicits R21 applications for research to conduct economic analyses of prevention and health. Applications must be responsive to one of four topic areas that target research that addresses costs of health care, benefits to the health care system and other sectors of the economy and cost-effectiveness all within the context of prevention and health. 35-4 Arctic Research Opportunities (NSF)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites investigators at U.S. organizations to submit proposals to conduct research about the Arctic. Arctic research includes field and modeling studies, data analysis, and synthesis about the arctic region. The goal of the NSF Division of Arctic Sciences is to gain a better understanding of the Arctic's physical, biological, geological, chemical, social and cultural processes; the interactions of oceanic, terrestrial, atmospheric, biological, social, cultural, and economic systems; and the connections that define the Arctic. The Division of Arctic Sciences and other NSF programs support projects that contribute to the development of the next generation of researchers and scientific literacy for all ages through education, outreach, and broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. 35-5 Strategies for Treatment of Young Adults with Alcohol Use Disorders (R01) (NIH)

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) invites applications to support new research on the treatment of young adults (18-25 years of age) with alcohol use disorders. Compared to all other age groups, the prevalence of periodic heavy or high-risk drinking is greatest among young adults aged 18 to 25. Alcohol use disorders, including alcohol dependence, also peak during this critical period during which profound development changes occur. Despite having the highest prevalence of drinking, interventions for this group have been understudied, Gaps exist in understanding how to effectively engage this group in treatment, which treatments are the most effective, and how to maintain treatment gains in the longer term after treatment. This FOA will utilize the R01 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with two FOAs of identical scientific scope, PAS-10-247 that encourages applications under the R03 mechanism and PAS-10-248 that encourages applications under the R21 mechanism. 35-6 Discovery Research K-12 (DR K-12) (NSF)

The Discovery Research K-12 (DR K-12) program seeks to enable significant advances in student and teacher learning of the STEM disciplines. Projects funded under this solicitation begin with a research question or hypothesis about how to improve preK-12 STEM learning and teaching and then develop, implement, and study effects of innovative educational resources, models, or technologies. DR K-12 invites proposals that meet a variety of educational needs, from those that address immediate challenges facing preK-12 STEM education to those that anticipate the future when expectations, roles and resources are likely to be aligned in different ways. The DR K-12 program is primarily concerned with the goals and effectiveness of formal education, yet it recognizes that learning is not limited to traditional school sites and times. As appropriate, the program encourages projects to draw from knowledge and practice of learning in out-of-school and informal settings. The DR K-12 program accepts proposals for exploratory projects, full research and development projects, and synthesis projects, as well as for conferences and workshops related to the mission of the program. 35-7 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (NRC)

The NRC regulates the nation's civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. The NRC's Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) furthers the agency's regulatory mission by providing technical advice, technical tools and information for identifying and resolving safety issues, making regulatory decisions, and promulgating regulations and guidance. RES awards support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by named Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs) in areas representing the investigators' specific interests and competencies, based on the mission of the NRC. Proposals to conduct independent experiments and analyses, develop technical bases for supporting realistic safety decisions by the agency, and evaluating safety issues involving current and new designs and technologies will be accepted. 35-8 Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG) (NSF)

The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) supports research and education in the Earth, Ocean, Atmospheric, and Geospace Sciences. The Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG) Program is designed to address the fact that certain groups are underrepresented in the geosciences relative to their proportions in the general population. The primary goal of the OEDG Program is to increase participation in the geosciences by African American, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans (American Indians and Alaskan Natives), Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesians or Micronesians), and persons with disabilities. A secondary goal of the program is to increase the perceived relevance of the geosciences among broad and diverse segments of the population. The OEDG offers three funding Tracks: OEDG Planning Grants; Track 1: Proof-of-Concept Projects; and Track 2: Full-Scale Projects. Institutions may submit only one Track 2 proposal as either the Lead Institution of a Collaborative Proposal or the sole submitting organization. NSF 10-599

35-9 Small University Grants Open 5-Year Broad Agency Announcement (DOD)

This is a 5-year, open-ended Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) to solicit research proposals for the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)'s Space Vehicles Directorate, which is looking to establish a university grant vehicle that can provide small grants to students/professors in a timely manner to engage U.S./U.S. territories' colleges and universities in space-related basic, applied, and advanced research projects that are of interest to the Department of Defense. 35-10 NIDCD Research on Hearing Health Care (R01) (NIH)

This FOA, issued by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations to support research leading to accessible and affordable hearing health care (HHC). The overarching emphasis is on the acquisition of knowledge that can be rapidly translated into new or enhanced approaches for access, assessment or interventions with a goal to delivering better hearing health care outcomes. 35-12 Research to Understand and Inform Interventions that Promote the Research Careers of Students in Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences (R01) (NIH)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) solicits applications that propose research designed to test assumptions and hypotheses regarding social and behavioral factors with the aim of advising and guiding the design of potential interventions intended to increase interest, motivation and preparedness for careers in biomedical and behavioral research. NIGMS is particularly interested in those interventions that are specifically designed to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups entering careers in these disciplines. The proposed research need not be restricted to underrepresented students. Comparative research that analyzes the experience of all groups in order to place that of underrepresented students in context and to learn whether and how interventions should be tailored to make more underrepresented students successful in biomedical careers may well be particularly illuminating and is, therefore, encouraged.
