The Center for Engagement and Community Development (CECD) solicits proposals for projects that will support community development and will lead to enhanced engagement in teaching, research, and/or outreach. For the Spring 2009 RFP, CECD is soliciting proposals that address some aspect related to the sustainability of rural grocery stores. CECD believes rural grocery stores are a critical infrastructure for rural Kansas communities and essential for community sustainability and development. Examples of proposals might include, but are not limited to: develop a buy-local campaign; conduct a study exploring strategies that bring healthy food and nutritious foods to local residents; establish a pilot rural grocer entrepreneurship program; conduct an economic/business analysis of forms of ownership of rural grocery stores; produce oral histories of rural groceries, communities, and owners; develop a service-learning course that addresses rural grocery issues; and/or write a series of white papers on significant issues facing rural grocers.
11-2 Recovery Act Limited Competition: Core Facility Renovation, Repair, and Improvement (G20) (NIH)
This FOA issued by the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health, solicits applications from institutions that propose to renovate, repair, or improve core facilities. For the purpose of this FOA, a core facility is defined as a centralized shared resource that provides access to instruments or technologies or services, as well as expert consultation to investigators supported by the core. The major objective of this FOA is to upgrade core facilities to support the conduct of PHS supported biomedical and/or behavioral research. Support can be requested to alter and renovate the core facility as well as to improve the general equipment in the core facility or to purchase general equipment for specialized groups of researchers. In situations when similar core facilities exist in different departments at an institution, funding can be requested in support of centralizing these core facilities. It is expected that all awards will be expended expeditiously and that applicants will consider the use of green technologies and design approaches. The NCRR High-End Instrumentation Grant (HEI) program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase a single major item of equipment to be used for biomedical research that costs at least $600,000. The maximum award is $8,000,000. Additionally, it is expected that the funds will be expended expeditiously, within 18-24 months from the date of award. Instruments in this category include, but are not limited to, structural and functional imaging systems, macromolecular NMR spectrometers, high-resolution mass spectrometers, cryoelectron microscopes and supercomputers. The NCRR Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) program solicits applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade commercially available instruments that cost at least $100,000. The maximum award is $500,000. Types of instruments supported include confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell sorters, X-ray diffraction systems, and NMR spectrometers among others. AFRI is a new competitive grant program to provide funding for fundamental and applied research, extension, and education to address food and agricultural sciences. While AFRI covers an equally broad scope of topics and will support many of the grant types offered by the former National Research Initiative, the new authority allows greater flexibility in the types of projects funded to include: single function projects in research, education and extension, and integrated research education and/or extension awards. AFRI is the new core competitive grant program for research, education, and extension. The program has multiple deadline dates occurring throughout FY 2009. The United Sorghum Checkoff Program is soliciting proposals for targeted research and education. The goal of this RFP is to Increase Yield Annually by New Research and Other Agronomic Factors. Targeted topic areas are, but are not limited to: 1) Development and Deployment of Whole Plant Cold Tolerance; 2) Development and Deployment of Water Management and Water Use Efficiency; and 3) Research and Deployment of Efficient Fertilization to Maximize Yields.

The goal of this RFP Call is to Increase Yield Annually through Producer Education with Existing Knowledge by 2011. Targeted topic areas are, but are not limited to: 1) Deployment of Best Practices through Demonstration of New Sorghum Hybrids; 2) Development and Expansion of Sorghum Forage Trials; and 3) Limited Irrigation Optimization Strategies as Shown through Research and Demonstration Plots.
11-8 Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grant Program: National Integrated Food Safety Initiative (USDA)
The purpose of the National Integrated Food Safety Initiative is to support food safety projects that demonstrate an integrated approach to solving problems in applied food safety research, education, or extension. Various models for integration of applied research, education, and extension will be considered for funding. Applications describing multi-state, multi-institutional, multidisciplinary, and multifunctional activities (and combinations thereof) are encouraged. Applicants are strongly encouraged to address at least two of the three functional areas of research, education, and extension (i.e., research and extension, research and education, or extension and education). EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) is soliciting initial proposals to advance partnerships that focus on pesticide risk management issues with a special focus on integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. Awards are intended to support a diverse set of project types, including, but not limited to demonstrations, transfer of innovative IPM technologies, outreach, and education. EPA will segregate all proposals into three primary sectors: Agricultural IPM, Community IPM, and Infectious Diseases IPM. The purpose of this Annual Program Statement (APS) is to solicit applications for funding. The United States Government, through USAID, is seeking initial concept papers and then full applications to implement activities in support of the program to develop Abiotic Stress Tolerant Rice and Wheat using biotechnology as a tool. The geographic focus under consideration is USAID's geographic definition of South Asia. Through this APS, USAID will facilitate the evaluation of selected technologies under field conditions in India, the most promising of which may be selected for further development and delivery to farmers in India and, eventually South Asia. This program supports local efforts to enhance the oral language, cognitive, and early reading skills of preschool-aged children, especially those from low-income families, through strategies, materials, and professional development that are grounded in scientifically based reading research. The Secretary is especially interested in preschool programs that operate full-time, full-year, early childhood educational programs that serve children for the two consecutive years prior to their entry into kindergarten. For applicants serving children with limited English proficiency, the Secretary is especially interested in applications that include a specific plan for the development of English language proficiency for these children from the start of their preschool experience. The Early Reading First program is designed to prepare children to enter kindergarten with the necessary cognitive, early language, and literacy skills for success in school. The Secretary is especially interested in applications that include a specific plan to transition preschool-aged children to kindergarten. The Office of Nuclear Physics, Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy, announces its interest in receiving proposals for initiatives in Applications of Nuclear Science and Technology, aimed at research and development activities in nuclear science that are relevant to applications important to the nation. The knowledge, data, techniques, and methods of nuclear science are utilized in a broad portfolio of applications, including energy, nuclear medicine, commerce, medical physics, space exploration, finance, geology, environmental sciences and national security. 11-13 NIST Recovery Act Measurement Science and Engineering Research Grants Program: Providing the Technology Infrastructure to Address National Priorities (NIST)
The U.S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology, announces the availability of funding in support of measurement science and engineering research as part of NIST's activities through the recovery Act. Proposals will be considered that address measurement science and engineering research needs in areas of national importance. These areas are: energy, environment and climate change, information technology/cybersecurity; biosciences, healthcare, manufacturing, and physical infrastructure.
