Limited Submissions

Limited submission programs have sponsor restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted by a single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which applications will be submitted. 40-1 Facilitating Interdisciplinary Research via Methodological and Technological Innovation in the Behavioral and Social Sciences (R21) (NIH)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications to develop new/innovative measures, methods, and technologies that support the interdisciplinary integration of human social and/or behavioral science with other disciplines across varying levels of analysis. Applications must involve interdisciplinary research teams. These interdisciplinary teams must include behavioral and/or social scientists in addition to scientists from other discipline(s). 40-2 Developmental and Learning Sciences (NSF)

This program supports studies that increase our understanding of cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, and biological processes related to children's and adolescents' development and learning. Additional priorities are to support developmental research that: incorporates multidisciplinary, multi-method, microgenetic, and longitudinal approaches; develops new methods and theories; examines transfer of knowledge from one domain to another and from one situation to another; assesses peer relations, family interactions, social indentities, and motivation; examines the impact of family, school, and community resources; assesses adolescents' preparation for entry into the workforce; and investigates the role of demographic characteristics and cultural influences on children's development. 40-3 Plant Feedback Genomics for Bioenergy: A Joint Research Solicitation (DOE)

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, Office of Biological and Environmental Research (OBER), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), National Research Initiative (NRI) Competitive Grants Program hereby announce their interest in receiving applications for genomics-based research that will lead to the improved use of biomass and plant feedstocks for the production of fuels such as ethanol or renewable chemical feedstocks. Specifically, applications are sought for the fundamental research on plants that will improve biomass characteristics, bio-mass yield, or that will facilitate lignocellulosic degradation. Systems biology approaches to identify genetic indicators enabling plants to be efficiently bred or manipulated, or research that yields fundamental knowledge of the structure, function and organization of plant genomes leading to improved feedstock characterization and sustainability are also encouraged. 40-4 Implementation Grants for Special Projects (NEH)

Special Project grants support a variety of public humanities program formats, including public discussion forums, hands-on learning experiences, discussion series based on reading or film-viewing, multi-faceted conferences, or symposia. Small exhibitions or interpretive publications might serve as common texts for such programs. 40-5 Rehabilitation Research Fellowship Program (ED)

The purpose of the Research Fellowships Program is to build research capacity by providing support to enable highly qualified individuals, including those who are individuals with disabilities, to conduct research about the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. The program provides two categories of Research Fellowships: Merit Fellowships and Distinguished Fellowships. To be eligible for a Distinguished Fellowship, an individual must have seven or more years of research experience in subject areas, methods, or techniques relevant to rehabilitation research and must have a doctorate, other terminal degree. To be eligible for a Merit Fellowship, an individual must have either advanced professional training or independent study experience in an area that is directly pertinent to disability and rehabilitation. 40-6 Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (NSF)

The Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program seeks to increase the number of qualified students entering the fields of information assurance and computer security and to increase the capacity of the United States higher education enterprise to continue to produce professionals in these fields to meet the needs to our increasingly technological society. The SFS program is composed of two tracks: The Scholarship Track provides funding to colleges and universities to award scholarships to students in the information assurance and computer security fields for the final two years of undergraduate study, or for two years of master's-level study, or for the final two years of Ph.D. level study. The Capacity Building Track provides funds to improve the quality and increase the production of information assurance and computer security professionals. Professional development of information assurance faculty and development of academic programs can be funded under this track. The lead institution in a proposing consortium must either: 1) have a CAE/IAE designation or 2) have an information assurance program that meets criteria equivalent to those necessary for CAE/IAE designation. 40-7 Sensors as Robots (DOD)

Sensors as Robots represents the next evolutionary step in sensor development. The program proposes an autonomous constellation of autonomous sensors utilizing advanced knowledge-based algorithms that leverage knowledge of the environment, targets and past experiences to provide performance gains of orders of magnitude in interference rejection, target detection, identification and tracking. Unlike existing fielded monolithic systems, Sensors as Robots strives to produce sensors that augment existing capabilities by optimally utilizing all available resources in a pervasive and anticipatory manner. It is also envisioned that this technology will facilitate sensing missions that humans are not capable of or available to conduct. BAA-07-02-IFKA (GG 10/24/06)

40-8 Networking Technology Systems (NSF)

NSF's Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS) program solicits proposals from the networking research and education community, encouraging investigators to make bold assumptions about the future of networking. The scope of the program covers all properties of information networks including network architecture, protocols, algorithms, and proof of concept implementation of hardware and software. Research activities include creation of network architectures, modeling of phenomena, network design, analysis, measurement, and performance evaluation. The research scope of the program spans many types of networks that include end-to-end complex wide-area networks and subnetworks including local area networks, ad hoc networks, sensor networks, vehicular networks, and optical networks. 40-9 Scientific Computing Research Environments for the Mathematical Sciences (SCREMS)(NIH)

The Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) of the National Science Foundation plans a limited number of awards for the support of computing environments for research in the mathematical sciences. Proposals may request support for the purchase of computing equipment and limited support for professional systems administrators or programmer personnel for research computing needs. 40-10 Computer Systems Research (NSF)

The Computer Systems Research (CSR) program supports innovative research and education projects that have the potential to: lead significant improvements in computer systems by increasing our fundamental understanding of them; address challenges raised by new technologies or system requirements; lead to systems software that is quantifiably more reliable, easier to use, and/or more efficient; and produce innovative curricula or educational materials that better prepare the next generation of computing professionals. The CSR program is partitioned into two parts: CORE areas to support traditional CSR research and education topics. Awards in the core areas may be Single Investigator and Small Group awards; or Team Awards. THEMATIC areas to stimulate research and education in topics that are considered timely and of emerging importance. 40-11 Software Development for Cyberinfrastructure (NSF)

The purpose of the Software Development for Cyberinfrastructure (SDCI) program is to develop, deploy, and sustain a set of reusable and expandable software components and systems that benefit a broad set of science and engineering applications. SDCI is a continuation of the NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) in an expanded context appropriate to the current expanded vision of cyberinfrastructure. This program supports software development across three major sectors: system software and tools for High Performance Computing (HPC) environments; software promoting NSF's strategic vision for digital data; and software in the form of middleware capabilities and services to support distributed resource sharing and virtual organizations. 40-12 Research Demonstration and Dissemination Grants (R18) (NIH)

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage the scientific community to conduct Demonstration and Dissemination (D&D) studies to test the effectiveness of interventions in children, adolescents, and/or adults to: 1) promote healthful behaviors; 2) reduce risk factors for heart, lung, and blood diseases, and sleep disorders; 3) improve the prevention or management of heart, lung, and blood diseases, and sleep disorders, including the delivery of health care services; and 4) enhance understanding of the processes of intervention implementation and diffusion, or sustainability in a defined population, or defined clinical or community setting. 40-13 International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) [K01] (NIH)

This program supports U.S. postdoctoral biomedical, epidemiological, clinical, social and behavioral scientists in the formative stages of their careers to conduct research in developing countries. These awards will provide the successful candidates with a three to four year period of intensive mentored research, leading to an independent research career focused on global health. This research must be directly linked to an established collaboration between a U.S. mentor/sponsor with a leading developing country scientists at an internationally recognized research institution in a developing country.
