Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization that supports scholarly field research worldwide in the biological, physical, social, and cultural sciences. The Research Program at Earthwatch is responsible for soliciting, reviewing, and recommending research proposals for support. Earthwatch provides scientists with the funding and labor they need in the form of motivated, dedicated, paying volunteers. This unique funding model enables us to support research in a variety of disciplines, on the basis of a researcher's need for volunteers and Earthwatch's ability to find them. The Institute supports research covering a variety of topics and welcomes a diverse scientific community.
This initiative is intended to support collaborations between scientists with basic and clinical expertise to advance understanding of the etiology, prevention, and treatment of environmentally-induced human diseases. The objective of this initiative is to foster scientific collaboration between clinical and basic investigators to accelerate the application of basic research results into clinical settings to improve human health in those areas where environmental factors are known or expected to influence the development or progression of human disease. Scientific knowledge achieved through this research program is expected to move the field of environmental health sciences into new directions and approaches for the identification, treatment, and prevention of environmentally-related diseases or disorders. Through this initiative, the NIEHS will support both the development of new collaborations between researchers with basic and clinical expertise and the continued efforts of existing collaborations. The National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) will hold two competitions. Under the first competition, NCSER will consider only applications that address one of the following special education research topics: Early Intervention, Early Childhood Special Education, and Assessment for Young Children with Disabilities, Mathematics and Science Education, Reading, Writing, and Language Development, Serious Behavior Disorders, Assessment for Accountability. Under the second competition, NCSER will consider only applications that address one of the following special education research topics: Response to Intervention, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Teacher Quality and Quality of Other Service Providers for Students with Disabilities, Secondary and Transition Services, Individualized Education Programs and Individualized Family Service Plans. The Director of the Institute of Education Sciences (Institute) announces the Institutes FY 2007 competitions for grants to support education research. The National Center for Education Research (NCER) will hold two competitions. Under the first competition, NCER will consider only applications that address one of the following education research or research training topics: Reading and Writing, Mathematics and Science Education, Teacher Quality--Reading and Writing, Teacher Quality--Mathematics and Science Education, Education Leadership, Education Policy, Finance, and Systems, Postdoctoral Research Training. The goal of Computational Science Training for Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences (CSUMS) is to enhance computational aspects of the education and training of undergraduate students in the mathematical sciences--mathematics and statistics--and to better prepare these students to pursue careers and graduate study in fields that require integrated strengths in computation and the mathematical sciences. The core of the activity is long-term research experiences for cohorts of at least six undergraduates. The Sunflowers Foundation has announced a new Request for Proposals in one of the foundation's five specific interest areas: Health Care Access (Bridge Grants, Health Disparities); Capacity Building (Capacity Building); Healthy Behaviors and Prevention (Physical Activity & Healthy Eating, Walking Trails). The National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) invite research grant applications that will employ an integrative approach using state-of-the-art technologies to gain insight into the molecular and biochemical mechanisms by which chronic alcohol consumption leads to the development of cancers of various organs such as oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach, large intestine, liver and breast. This includes investigating roles of various factors such as acetaldehyde, cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), impaired immune function, and alcohol-induced impaired metabolism of s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), folate, betaine, iron, and vitamin A. The objective of this initiative is to promote a thorough exploration and characterization of the bi-directional communication between multipotent cells and the three-dimensional local milieu or niche that they encounter in vivo under normal and compromised states, such as with aging or following injury, disease or drug exposure. The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) was established in 1991 to pursue the following objectives: a) To promote collaboration between Japan and the United States with the goal of fulfilling shared global responsibilities and contributing to improvements in the world's welfare; b) To enhance dialogue and interchange between Japanese and US citizens on a wide range of issues, thereby improving bilateral relations. In order to realize these primary objectives, CGP has established the following three programs for its grant-making activities: Intellectual Exchange Programs, Grassroots Exchange Program, and Education Program.

The Eurasia Foundation awards grants and operates targeted programs through innovation, collaboration, imaginative co-funding ideas and unique evaluation mechanisms. The Foundation's grant-making program supports projects with the potential to advance significantly one or more of the following goals in three broad program areas: 1) Private Enterprise Development--accelerated development and growth of private enterprise; 2) Public Administration and Policy--more effective, responsive, and accountable local government; and 3) Civil Society-- increased citizen participation in the political and economic decision-making process.
The National Science Foundation announces the area of Cognitive Neuroscience within the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences. Cognitive neuroscience has emerged in the last decade as an intensely active and influential discipline, forged from interactions among the cognitive sciences, neurology, neuroimaging (including physics and statistics), physiology, neuroscience, psychiatry, and other fields. Of particular importance for this discipline have been new methods for non-invasive functional neuroimaging of humans performing psychological tasks. As this field is reaching maturity, the National Science Foundation intends for the new cognitive neuroscience emphasis to spur the development of highly novel techniques and models directed toward enabling basic scientific understanding of a broad range of issues involving brain, cognition, and behavior. The emphasis at NSF will be placed on integration of the cognitive sciences, social and economic sciences, and engineering in service of insights into healthy functions of brain, cognition, and behavior.
