The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) seeks to increase the number of students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 proposals are solicited that provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 proposals are solicited that support educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM. An institution is allowed to submit only one Type 1 proposal, or to be part of only one consortium submitting a Type 1 proposal. The Human computer Interaction (HCI) program supports research and related education activities fundamental to the design and evaluation of systems that mediate between computers and humans, and which will lead to the creation of tomorrow's exciting new user interface software and technology. HCI research Topics include, but are not limited to: development and formal experimental evaluation of foundational models and theories; augmented cognition and novel uses of computer technologies in education; multi-media and multi-modal interfaces in which combinations of text, graphics, gesture, movement, touch, sound, etc. are used by people and machines to communicate with one another; intelligent interfaces; information visualization; virtual and augmented reality; immersive environments; wearable, mobile, and ubiquitous computing; and new I/O devices. 49-3 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) (NSF)
The PAESMEM Program seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The awardees serve as leaders in the national effort to develop fully the Nation's human resources in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Rehabilitation Long-Term Training program provides financial assistance for projects that provide basic or advanced training leading to an academic degree, provide a specified series of courses or program of study leading to award of a certificate, or provide support for medical residents enrolled in residency training programs in the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation. The National Science Foundation seeks proposals for collaborative research at the intersection of mathematical sciences and geosciences and to encourage cross-discipline education through summer training activities. Research should fall within one of three broad themes: mathematical and statistical modeling of large, complex geosystems; representation of uncertainty in geosystems; or analysis of large geoscience data sets. Research groups should include at least one mathematical scientist and at least one geoscientist. NSF 04-508
The Grants for the Department-Level Reform of Undergraduate Engineering Education solicitation provides an opportunity for institutions to compete for planning and implementation grants to assist departmental and larger units in: Engaging faculty in the scholarship of learning and teaching on a department wide basis, Developing, implementing, assessing and disseminating comprehensive plans to reformulate, streamline and update engineering degree programs, Developing, implementing, assessing department wide transformational change of student learning experiences, Incorporating Service Learning opportunities into engineering programs, Meeting the emerging workforce and educational needs of U.S. industry, and Incorporating methods for integration of research and teaching. The National Science Foundation invites requests for funds to support instrumentation required for research training in the Earth sciences. The program will consider proposals for: acquisition or modernization of research equipment; development of new instrumentation, analytical techniques and/or software that extend current research capabilities in the Earth sciences; support of shared facilities that make complex and expensive instrumentation systems available nationally or regionally; and research technician support. 49-9 CISE Combined Research and Curriculum Development and Educational Innovation Program (CRCD/EI) (NSF)
The objective of this program is to stimulate innovative activities in the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) disciplines by encouraging the transfer of state-of-the-art research results into undergraduate and introductory graduate curricula, by disseminating best practices in Information Technology (IT) education, investigating emerging areas, and implementing new IT programs. The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are seeking research proposals that address 14 issues identified by a 20-member board of international experts. The topics are seen as pivotal to alleviating health problems in poor and developing countries. Funding goals are: to improve childhood vaccines, create new vaccines, control insects that transmit agents of disease, improve nutrition to promote health, improve drug treatment of infectious diseases, cure latent and chronic infections, and measure disease and health status accurately and economically in developing countries. The Heartland Affiliate of the American Heart Association will offer awards for: Predoctoral candidates to help students initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research; Postdoctoral fellowships to help trainees initiate a career in cardiovascular and stroke research while obtaining significant research results; Beginning Grant-in-Aid awards in all basic disciplines as well as epidemiological, community and clinical investigators that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems; and Grants-in-Aid to encourage and adequately fund the most innovative and meritorious research projects from independent investigators.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is inviting proposals for ground based research projects focused on space radiation biology and space radiation shielding materials. Grantees will use beams of high-energy heavy nuclei provided by NASA laboratories, which simulate the high-energy, high-charge components of galactic cosmic rays that constitute the biologically most significant component of space radiation. Five categories of radiation risks of priority interest are: carcinogens; degenerative tissue diseases, including damage to the central nervous system, cataracts, circulatory diseases and other late noncancer risks; early radiation syndromes; radiation and sterility, fertility and hereditary risks; synergistic risks from the combined effects of radiation, microgravity; and other spacecraft environmental factors. Studies may include animals (including humans), plants, tissues, or cells. Researchers should use the most appropriate species for their research.
The National Institutes of Health invites NIH-funded investigators to submit supplemental research grant applications to develop methodological innovations in the behavioral and social sciences. Methodology issues include research design, data collection techniques, measurement, and data analysis techniques in the social and behavioral sciences. Development of methodology and technology for multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, multimethod, and multilevel analytic approaches that integrate behavioral and social science research with biomedical research is particularly encouraged. 49-14 Eurasia Professional Exchanges and Training Program for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan (STATE)
The Office of Citizen Exchanges of the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (the Bureau) invites applicants to submit proposals that encourage the growth of democratic institutions, in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Single country projects only are eligible for support. This competition is based on the premise that people-to-people exchanges encourage and strengthen democratic initiatives and nurture the social, political and economic development of societies. Exchanges and training programs supported by institutional grants from the Bureau should operate at two levels: They should enhance institutional partnerships, and they should offer practical information and experience to individuals and groups to assist them with their professional responsibilities. The Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics (MMS) Program is an interdisciplinary program that supports the development of innovative methods and models for the social and behavioral sciences. The MMS Program interacts with the other programs in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), as well as other programs in the Foundation, most notably the Statistics and Probability Program in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS).
