The Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration is inviting applications for training programs focused on raising technical skills levels of employed and unemployed workers so they can compete for and advance in areas of domestic skill shortages, mainly high technology occupations. Partnerships must consist of at least two businesses or a business-related nonprofit organization that represents more than one business. The partnership may also include any educational, labor, faith-based or community organization or workforce investment board. At least 80 percent of awards will go to projects that train workers in high technology, biotechnology and biomedical research and manufacturing, and innovative services. (FR 06/24/03)
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is soliciting nominations for its Summer Stipend Program which provides support for two months of full-time research and writing in the humanities. An institution can only submit two nominations, one of which must be from a junior faculty member. Larry Rodgers, Associate Dean, Arts and Sciences, is coordinating the nomination process. Proposals must be submitted to him by September 15 for internal screening.
The Office of Public Diplomacy announces an open competition for a proposal for Gulf Educational Reform program in the following countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman and Yemen. One award will be made with this announcement. Proposals may address any area or sector within a broad range of educational reform initiatives in the aforementioned countries, including, but not limited to, the following: Designing and mapping curriculum; Developing critical thinking skills; Introducing modern and innovative teaching methods to the classroom; Consulting on accreditation for Ministries of Education for both secondary and university-level institutions.
The Education Department's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services invites applications for a center to provide technical assistance and information to strengthen the ability of states and localities to improve early intervention, education and transitional services and results for children with disabilities and their families and, toward that end, address systemic change efforts. The dissemination clearinghouse will provide a central repository of information and products developed by technical assistance grantees; maintain a database of those and other science-based materials; and disseminate products. The Education Department seeks applications under two programs designed to improve services for children with disabilities. Funds support one award to establish a research institute on progress monitoring of learning for children with significant cognitive and developmental disabilities; and one award to establish a technical assistance and dissemination center on progress monitoring to provide technical assistance to state and local education agencies and disseminate information on progress monitoring, especially for use in content areas taught grades K-5. 31-8 Endurance Limit of Hot Mix Asphalt Mixtures to Prevent Fatigue Cracking in Flexible Pavements (NCHRP)
Fatigue cracking originating at the bottom of a hot mix asphalt (HMA) structure has long been acknowledged as the most costly form of distress to correct through rehabilitation. The objectives of this study are 1) test the hypothesis that there is an endurance limit in the fatigue behavior of HMA mixtures and measure its value for a representative range of HMA mixtures and 2) recommend a procedure to incorporate the effects of the endurance limit into mechanistic pavement design methods. 31-9 Design and Construction Guidelines for Long-Span Decked Precast, Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges (NCHRP)
The use of decked precast, prestressed concrete girders has been limited because of concerns about certain design and construction issues that are perceived to influence the structural integrity of the bridge system. These issues include connections between adjacent unites, longitudinal joints, longitudinal camber and cross slope, live load distribution, continuity for live load, lateral load resistance, skew effects, maintenance, replaceability and other factors that influence constructibility and performance. Research is needed to address the issues that significantly influence the performance of long-span decked precast, prestressed concrete girder bridges and to develop guidelines for their design and construction. The CRC Program is designed to promote interdisciplinary collaborative research in a coherent, defined project at the forefront of the chemical sciences. CRC proposals will involve three or more investigators with complementary expertise. Co-investigators may include researchers with backgrounds in diverse areas of chemistry and other science and engineering disciplines appropriate to the proposed research. The use of cyber-infrastructure to enable and enhance collaboration is encouraged. Projects should be scientifically focused in areas supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry, limited in duration, and substantial in their scope and impact. NSF 03-583
The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation (CRPF) is pleased to announce the availability of grant and fellowship funding for innovative cancer prevention research. CRPF funding supports: Basic, clinical, translational and applied science projects; Behavioral research, screening and early detection; Pilot projects, as well as development and testing of new methodologies; Grants to cancer prevention researchers at the instructor or assistant professor level; Grants to more senior researchers who have shifted their area of interest toward primary cancer prevention; Post-doctoral fellowships in cancer prevention; Creative or innovative approaches to cancer prevention research.
A deadline has been announced for the federal research funding award program for KU's NIH COBRE (Center Of Biomedical Research Excellence) First Award grants from the Center for Cancer Experimental Therapeutics. COBRE Awards are designed to help faculty attain competitive funding early in their careers. Faculty members who have not served as a principal investigator on an NIH RO1 research grant and who are early in their careers are eligible to receive up to $100,000 over two years. Research related to cancer, which falls primarily under the umbrella of the National Cancer Institute of the NIH, other relevant NIH agencies, and the COBRE Center for Cancer Experimental Therapeutics, will be considered for COBRE First Awards.
The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to initiate a broad research effort to support novel work on the inciting immunopathogenic mechanisms leading to nontuberculous granulomatous inflammation in the lungs pertaining to sarcoidosis. Investigators new to sarcoidosis research are particularly encouraged to develop projects in this area. Research involving human tissues or biological samples are encouraged. The National Institute on Aging invites applications for research project grants to support basic research on the genetic and molecular basis of longevity. The goals of this request for applications are to identify and functionally characterize genes that play a role in determining and modulating longevity and health span and determine the molecular mechanism(s) of action of these Longevity Assurance Genes (LAGs). The Development and application of multidisciplinary scientific approaches to the elucidation of the genetic and molecular basis of aging and longevity is strongly encouraged. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites applications for program project (P01) grants to conduct interdisciplinary research to increase understanding of the biology and host-pathogen interactions of the medically important fungi. This fundamental knowledge will be applied to the development of new and improved strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of the mycoses. Therefore, the proposed research must be focused on the identification and validation of targets for the development of diagnostics, vaccines or therapeutics directed against systemic mycotic infections, leading to but not including clinical trials. 31-16 Cooperative Research for the Development of Vaccines, Adjuvants, Therapeutics, Immunotherapeutics, and Diagnostics for Biodefense and SARS (HHS)
The National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites investigator-directed cooperative research grant applications that will lead to the development of new vaccines, adjuvants, therapeutics, immunotherapeutics or diagnostics. These products should be focused on the toxins or pathogens listed in the NIAID Categories A, B and C list of priority pathogens or their arthropod vectors. Products focused on the newly recognized SARS Coronavirus are also responsive. The objective of this program is to support research in the early stages of product development (i.e., beyond basic research); however, for the area of immunotherapeutics more basic research is also appropriate.
