The Defense Sciences Office is interested in new proposals to develop robust technologies for designing DNA-encoded plug and play modules that will enable the use of organisms (e.g., plants, microbes, lower eukaryotes) as remote sentinels for reporting the presence of chemical or biological analytes. The ability to design and use organisms as sentinels is limited by the ease with which their molecular components and pathways can be designed and assembled to generate new sensing and reporting capabilities. The BIOS program, therefore, seeks to develop revolutionary technologies that will lead to facile engineering and assembly of functional biological circuits and pathways in living organisms. The Fulbright New Century Scholars Program brings together annually 25-30 outstanding research scholars and professionals from the U.S. and around the world. NCS fellows engage in multidisciplinary collaboration and dialogue on a topic of global significance under the leadership of a Distinguished New Century Scholar Leader. For the academic year 2002-2003, the research focus is Addressing Sectarian, Ethnic and Cultural Conflict within and across National Borders. NCS Fellows not only make an international exchange visit to further their research, but also participate in various forums to share their research and promote group objectives.

NIGEC supports university researchers developing scientific knowledge of effects of global environmental change associated with energy production on national resources (especially terrestrial ecosystems) with an emphasis on issues at the regional scale. NIGEC presently supports research on three topics: Exchange of carbon (e.g., uptake of atmospheric CO2) by U.S. terrestrial ecosystems; Effects of environmental change associated with energy production on U.S. terrestrial ecosystems; and Development and testing of ecosystem models needed for integrated assessments.
The Environmental Protection Agency is inviting applications to establish a Great Rivers Ecological Indicator Research program to support the development of biological indicators to report on the status and trends of large river systems. Rivers of interest are the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio. EPA is also interested in developing indicators which can capture and report on the interactions between the ecological health of the streams and their regional economies, such that we can measure progress towards ecological and economic sustainabilitY.
The Spencer Foundation makes grants for research to investigate ways in which education, broadly conceived, can be improved around the world. The Major Research Grants Program supports research projects requiring more than $35,000. Projects can range from medium-sized studies that can be completed within a year by an individual researcher to more extensive collaborative studies that can last several years. The Small Research Grants Program supports short-term projects (one year or less). The program is appropriate for modest-sized research projects, exploratory studies, specific phases of larger investigations, and projects that arise in response to unusual opportunities.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Office of Heavy Vehicle Technologies (OHVT), is seeking applications for cost-shared research and development for truck Essential Power Systems (EPS). Trucks include Class 2b through Class 8. The Essential Power System is a cross-cutting technology area (technologies and systems) that seeks to provide more efficient, practical, and cost effective management of electrical, mechanical, and thermal power on trucks. Research funding agencies in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the U.S. are working together to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities in materials research. NSF will consider proposals in two categories: Category A) Proposals that aim to support international collaboration in materials research among individual investigators, groups of investigators, or centers from the U.S. and one or more of the other six participating countries, and Category B) Proposals that aim to support international activities that are at the initial (pre-research) stages of international collaborative research projects and programs, and that can cover the costs associated with organizing workshops, seminars, conferences or symposia, and travel related to the project. The U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) announces the availability of a Broad Agency Announcement for Experimental and Theoretical Development of Quantum Computers. Proposals may be for: 1) Quantum Computing for both experimental and theoretical studies of potential physical embodiments of quantum logic and for more base studies in the related fields of quantum error correction and control, quantum decoherence and entanglement; or 2) Quantum Algorithm which should be primarily to develop new quantum computing algorithms but may also consider issues of quantum computational complexity and computability. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) invite research applications addressing biologic mechanisms related to aging processes that underlie the initiation and progression of prostate growth processes in middle-age, and the pathophysiologic connections of that growth process with the prostate diseases prevalent in older men, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and prostate cancer. 27-12 Auditory/ Perceptual Processing by Infants with Hearing Loss: Issues in Clinical Assessment and Management (NIH)
The purpose of this request for applications (RFA) is to support multidisciplinary research addressing auditory/ perceptual processing in infants with hearing loss. There are no tools or techniques that are sufficiently sensitive or developed for measuring/ evaluating progress or benefit of various habilitative strategies in these infants. There is little information available on the auditory/ perceptual processing abilities of infants with hearing loss. Information is lacking regarding suprathreshold auditory behaviors, perception of complex sounds, acquisition and organization of information necessary for language acquisition, multimodal perceptual processes, and cognitive factors such as learning and memory. Research that characterizes auditory/ perceptual performance in infants with hearing loss is needed to guide clinicians as they evaluate and monitor an infant's auditory and linguistic development in order to identify optimal intervention strategies. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) encourage investigator-initiated research grant applications to study women's health in sports and exercise. The purpose of this Program Announcement (PA) is to stimulate and foster a wide range of basic, translational and patient-oriented clinical studies. Improvement in our basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of sports injuries in women will help to solve the puzzle of why female athletes are more susceptible to certain types of injury. In addition, translational studies will be helpful in developing optimal prevention, rehabilitation and training strategies for injuries and overuse syndromes in the female athlete throughout the life spectrum. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), through the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch (DBSB), Center for Population Research (CPR), invites applications for infrastructure grants in support of population research relevant to the DBSB mission. Applicants may request funds to support infrastructure development and/or research designed to: 1) enhance the quality and quantity of population research conducted at an institution; and 2) develop new research capabilities to advance population research through innovative approaches.
