The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is offering a Question and Answer Session Friday, February 8, 2002 in 137 Waters Hall, 11:30 am--12:30 pm, to assist faculty in preparing their applications for the University Small Research Grant (USRG) program and the Faculty Development Award (FDA) program. The deadline for these programs, with funds to be awarded after July 1, 2002, is February 25, 2002.
The Cooperative Grants Program (COOP) of NASFA: Association of International Educators provides seed funds of up to $10,000 as well as programming and grant writing resources, for projects that creatively involve post-secondary international and U.S. study abroad students in U.S. campuses and communities. COOP invites proposals for innovative projects that: encourage international students and scholars attending U.S. colleges and universities to become involved in and knowledgeable about U.S. culture and society apart from their study/research programs; enhance the experience of U.S. students involved in study abroad prior to their departure or upon their return; and/or stimulate and strengthen interaction among international students, their U.S. peers, faculty, and communities.
RGK Foundation is an independent foundation begun in 1966 by Ronya and George Kozmetsky. They chose to commit the Foundation's resources to support medical and educational research with no geographic limitations. The focus of the Foundation broadened over the years and now includes three main components: Educational, Medical, and Community. Grants in these areas include support for research and conferences as well as support for programs that promote academic excellence in institutions of higher learning; programs that raise literacy levels; programs that attract minority and women students into fields of math, science, and technology; and programs that promote the health and well being of children.
The Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) has released a Request for Applications for the Integrated Research, Education and Extension Competitive Grants Program--Pest Management which supports integrated, multifunctional agricultural research, extension and education activities that address pest management priorities. Priorities are: Crops at Risk (CAR); Risk Avoidance and Mitigation Program (RAMP); Methyl Bromide Transitions Program (MBT); Organic Transitions Program (ORG); and Pest Management Centers.
The National Commission for Science on Sustainable Forestry's (NCSSF) mission is to improve the scientific basis for the design, conduct and evaluation of sustainable forestry practices in the U.S. NCSSF is soliciting Letters of Intent for research, information synthesis, scientific assessments, tool development and a survey of practices that will emphasize establishing a baseline of information and assessments for selecting future NCSSF research.
Summer seminars and institutes provide school teachers and college and university teachers with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of humanities scholarship and teaching through intensive study of significant topics, texts, and issues. The March 1 deadline is for applications for project directors for projects beginning no earlier than May next year and also for participants for the coming summer who should submit directly to the project director of the seminar or institute they wish to attend.
The Lumina Foundation for Education is dedicated to expanding access to an education beyond high school. The Foundation believes that education is the best way to help people achieve their potential and improve the future of the nation. It will concentrate its efforts in three theme areas: Addressing the issue of financial access to postsecondary education; Supporting efforts that help postsecondary students identify appropriate options and remain in school until they attain their educational objectives; Understanding and addressing the challenges faced by nontraditional students, including adult students, first-generation college goers, and underserved groups of students.
The Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation (NSF) announces an Initiative on Quantitative Systems Biotechnology. This continuing Initiative seeks innovative high risk/high return research that will yield quantitative models, quantitative analytical tools, and improved experimental tools to enable the use of genomic data for predicting phenotype or for solidifying the understanding of the design principles of intact unicellular and engineered unicellular organisms. The aim of this Initiative is to channel recent developments into a positive impact on bioprocess analysis, design, and control. The Naval Air Systems Team (NAST) is soliciting proposals for research and development concepts in sensor integration and communication technologies. Concepts proposed may represent novel dedicated technologies and/or dual use of new emerging commercial technology. Sensor integration and communications addresses any system that processes data from multiple sensors in real-time or incorporates some mechanism of communication of sensor data to an integration node. The overall program objectives are: (A) to explore new concepts through emerging multi-sensor integration or adaptive data communications technologies; (B) create adaptations to better suit the needs of the war-fighting community; (C) certify the sustainability and safety of of candidate systems, and (D) promote those systems through the procurement process. The objective of this program is to study the electronic, optical and magnetic properties of semiconductor and magnetic structures with nanometer scale dimensions. Layered materials of semiconductors and magnetic metals are developed and nanolithographic methods used to fabricate device structures dominated by quantum or spin phenomena. Devices of interest include quantum wells, quantum dots, single electron transistors, spin transistors, magneto-resistance devices, and ultrashort channel FETs. Novel circuit architecture based on quantum effect devices are investigated.
Initiatives in this program are focused on mathematical programming and its application to problems in logistics, resource allocation, production, and command and control. The program supports research in linear, nonlinear, integer, and combinational optimization, and in sequencing and scheduling. Theoretical development, algorithm design and analysis, computational techniques for large-scale problems, and innovative and relevant applications are all of interest. Mathematical programming-based methods for solving large-scale logic problems in an area of particular emphasis.
The Justice Department's National Institute of Justice is inviting applications for research development that can increase applicability and reliability of DNA for forensic uses. NIJ is interest in research that builds on or improves upon existing technologies and methods and proposals based on new technologies. Areas of research include studies that emphasize developing methods or technologies that address the needs of databasing and/or methods that can be used for analyzing crime scene samples that are often limited in quality and quantity.
The Foundation is interested in the general field of microbiology, including medical disciplines, agricultural and soil microbiology, marine microbiology, and the diverse environmental interactions of microbes. Central concerns of the Foundation at presents include: 1) Raising the public awareness of microbial forms of life and their importance to human life; 2) Assisting in the general reform of science education in elementary and secondary schools, including K-12 teaching programs that make use of microorganisms; 3) fostering the use of contemporary communication techniques in microbial education of students and the general public; 4) Contributing to improved reporting of microbiological issues, and; 5) Advancing microbiological expertise in developing countries.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is seeking proposals under its climate and global change program for social science studies that probe human dimensions of the global distribution and dynamics of carbon sources. This year, the human dimensions piece of the program is specifically interested in building lessons learned from cases of climate forecast use to reveal how information can be best communicated and disseminated to groups otherwise unlikely to benefit from climate information. Research would consider how human perceptions and judgment, as well as public policy, influences forecast use and the most effective means of designing and delivering forecast information to improve usability. To advance the integration of research and education, the Law and Social Science Program of the National Science Foundation invites existing awardees to request a Research Experiences for Graduates (REG) Supplement. This grant will provide a stipend of up to $6,000 per student in supplemental funds to support the cost of a PhD student's closely mentored but independent research experience. The student's research should be a creative project, not a clerk's or assistant's task. The purpose of these awards is to give students a taste of the excitement of real research and to encourage principal investigators (Pis) to engage in cooperative, collaborative projects. NSF 02-014
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) seeks to encourage collaborative partnerships among scientists from various disciplines to facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to significant Public Health questions in child and adolescent mental health. This initiative serves as a catalyst for the Institute's long-term commitment to strengthening the research base on child and adolescent mental health. Critical to these efforts is the recognition of the importance of linking basic science and clinical intervention development, of accelerating the pace of intervention development by repositioning such work within real-world settings, and of realigning the evidence base with clinical and service practice. Scholarships are awarded to PhD students to undertake a three-month research project on any subject related to the basic sciences and aging. The research must be conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
