National Student Exchange

KSU has joined a domestic exchange program where undergraduates at K-State can study for one or two semesters at any one of the 190 NSE campuses while paying in-state tuition to Kansas State.

Want to live in an urban area?

You could live in Boston, New York, D.C., or Portland, Oregon.

Try a different geographic region!

NSE have member universities in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, and more. Or go to Puerto Rico or Canada.

Thinking about graduate school?

Spend a semester at a possible choice while an undergraduate.

What a more culturally diverse environment?

Study at a historically black institution, such as Howard University.

Widening Educational Horizons

The National Student Exchange (NSE) provides opportunities for Kansas State students to study for up to one calendar year at another NSE member college or university. Students participate in the NSE in order to:

  • Broaden perspectives
  • Explore new cultures
  • Widen boundaries
  • Explore new areas of study
  • Learn from different professors
  • Access new courses
  • Experience growth
  • Meet new people
  • Live in a different area
  • Investigate graduate schools
  • Seek future employment
  • Become more independent

Each year, more than 3000 students participate in NSE. They continue to make progress toward home campus degree programs while studying in new places, meeting new people, and enrolling in specialized courses or unique academic options which may not be available on their home campuses.

Where Can I Go?

There are 189 other NSE member colleges and universities to choose from. NSE member schools are found across the United States, including Puerto Rico, and Canada. This year, students are studying in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Oregon, and South Carolina. For a complete listing of NSE campuses, go to www.nse.org.

Placement

On your NSE application, you will provide a list of campuses you wish to attend. Most placements for both fall and spring semesters are made through the negotiation of home and host coordinators at NSE's annual conference in early March. The majority of applicants are placed at their first choice campus. Annually, 97% of the applicants are placed at one of their campus choices.

Credits and Grades

Classes you have satisfactorily completed on exchange will transfer back to Kansas State. Prior to exchange, you must complete an advising agreement with your academic advisor to ensure that the classes you take will count towards degree requirements. All classes transfer back as pass/fail grades.

Cost and Financial Aid

As a K-State student, you pay 15 credit hours of in-state tuition, plus average K-State fees to K-State. Out-of-state students benefit from in-state tuition while participating in this program! Fees assessed as a condition of enrollment (e.g., fees for laboratory courses, general service, computer, technology, art and photography supplies) are paid to the campus to which you exchange.

Room and meals are always paid to your host campus. You will be responsible for transportation, personal expenses, and sightseeing opportunities while on exchange.

You will continue to receive your financial aid through Kansas State. Nearly any scholarship held by a student can be used on the program.

Length of Exchange

You may participate in NSE for a single term or a full academic year. Some campuses can accommodate summer exchange. The maximum cumulative total for exchange participation may not exceed one calendar year.

Eligibility

To participate in the NSE, you must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria established by NSE:

  • Full-time enrollment
  • Cumulative 2.5 GPA
  • Good standing (academic, personal and financial)

Application Process

You will apply for the exchange through your home campus NSE coordinator. The application includes a non-refundable application fee, a transcript, recommendations, statement of goals, and biographical data.

Applications are due in mid-February for the following academic year. If you wish to participate in NSE for the spring semester, you must still apply the previous February.
