It is not common in the U.S. to carry large amounts of cash.  Most people will use a debit card, credit card or check to pay for items.  A debit card works as a credit card, except it withdraws funds directly from your checking or savings account.

Setting up a checking or savings account is easily done.  Two forms of identification are required to open the account, such as your passport and student I.D. card (which will be issued to you once you arrive on campus).
