International Education Week

International Education Week is an event sponsored in the fall by the Office of International Programs with the purpose of celebrating and promoting internationalization at K-State. Events such as the Vernon Larson Luncheon Lecture, All Things International Fair, and the International Educator Award reception are held through the week.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of Education and State. It celebrates the benefits of understanding the world around us so we can better communicate and collaborate with others from different cultures. It is an ideal opportunity to inspire students to broaden their horizons through global learning, foreign languages and international exchange.

The International Coordinating Council is hosting the International Food Festival 2011. Featuring traditional food from all over the world! This year, more than 15countries are represented. They include, China, India, Nepal,Aghanistan, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia,France, Kenya, Russia,Sri Lanka, Egypt, Thailand, Phillipines, Ghana and Libya! The event will be held on Saturday, November 5th at the ECM center on 1021 Denison Avenue. Two shifts are available: 5:30pm to7:00pm or 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

The 4 Pakistani students (2 women, 2 men) are here on a US State Dept.
funded program: Global Undergraduate Program - Pakistan. This is
administered through the International Resarch and Exchanges Board
(IREX), Washington, D.C. They are sent to host US universities for one
semester. This is a competitive program and they all have good academic
records and have been thoroughly vetted through the US Embassy folks (US
Education Foundation) in Pakistan.
While here they take at least one class in their major, plus one on
American culture/society class with the rest up to them. We find
student mentors (of the same gender) from their respective disciplines
who put in about 10 hours during the semester working with them on
skills for surviving US academic life and becoming an American
contact/buddy.
They also are required to get involved in 20 hours of community service
and also various cultural/social & civic events: e.g. museums, field
trips, concerts, city commission meetings, host families, sports events,
etc. The intent is to have an
immersion into the US culture as well as get do some academic work.

This international lecture series was begun in 1979 by Dr. Vernon C. Larson, then Director of International Agricultural Programs, and is the longest-running at K-State. With six presentations per year, held during the fall and spring semesters, the series offers an opportunity for the K-State community to hear presentations from faculty and individuals who have recently participated in an extensive overseas activity or who are involved in major international activities. The luncheon is open to everyone. Reservations for the luncheons can be made by e-mail (oip@ksu.edu) or by phone (532-5990) and should be made by noon of the Friday before each luncheon. You may also attend the lecture portion of this event, which begins at 12:15 p.m. at no cost.

Synopsis: Many years ago, Almaz's parents moved from Naryn to Bishkek in search of work. However, life in the city was full of hardships: little Almaz had to work and his education was placed on the back burner, but only for a while. Several years later, the seller of lemonade, collector of empties and barrow boy Almaz re-starts his studying and turns up in another world. Now, life takes on new meaning for Almaz, a sort of recognition of his victory over despair. This is a touching and inspiring story, told without haste, embellishment and sensationalism. This film destroys stereotypes and presents a new hero of our time.
Movie night is organized by Russian Speaking Society Soyuz and UPC.

- The Wampanoag saved the Pilgrims from starvation, and lived to regret it. Spurred on by their celebrated linguist Jane Little Doe Baird, the Wampanoag of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard are reviving their language more than a century after the last native speaker died. Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the School of Leadership Studies.

International Educator Award Ceremony and Reception
