International Student Support Coordinator

 

Kansas State University, a major public research university, invites applicants for the position of International Student Support Coordinator (Program Coordinator) for the International Student & Scholar Services, a unit of the Office of International Programs.  This position will serve as a point of contact for all international students seeking assistance with adaptation to U.S. culture; will serve as support for all new and incoming international students; and will work closely with all international students in order to protect and improve retention, to communicate with parents of international students to assist in student adjustments.  This position serves as an advocate for K-State and a liaison for international students.  This position reports to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services.

 

Duties include:

 

40%            Direct Student Contact-Both Trouble Shooting and Outreach

Assists all international students in adapting and adjusting to life in the U.S., Manhattan, and at K-State in order to improve opportunities for student success and retention. Refers international students to appropriate university offices and resources dependent upon the student’s particular needs and situation. Will provide direct support to ISSS during new international student orientation each semester.  Contacts all new non-ELP students during their first semester on campus to offer assistance/resources.  Proactive outreach to students of concern.  Serves as a resource for students who have experienced difficulties.  Coordinates volunteers during orientation including recruitment, organization, notifications and planning before the event and leadership and coordination during orientation.  Engages with international student organizations.  Uses data to identify and contact un-enrolled students who were enrolled one semester but not the next.  Serves as primary intake person meeting with students about their non-immigration concerns.  Meets with students with academic difficulties and works with academic departments and Deans’ staff to assist students and to advocate for them.  Maintains appropriate paperwork on students helped.               

 

 

30%            Programming

Plans and leads a workshop on cultural adjustment during orientation.                                                                                                        Co-Advises International Buddies (student organization).  Works with community and campus partners to coordinate programs.  Staffs numerous evening programs.  Coordinates trips for international students and scholars, approximately 4 per semester, 1 during the summer.

 

10%            Campus and Community Connections

Maintains appropriate and positive relationships with campus staff, faculty, department heads, and dean’s office representatives in order to assist students.  Represents ISSS on the management of the campus-wide MAP-Works committee. Serves on the International Students and Housing Committee.  Attends campus trainings, resource fairs, and other outreach events. 

 

10%            Communications and Marketing

Maintains ISSS Facebook Fanpage.  Maintains and updates ISSS slideshows on the website using Animoto and Youtube.  Publicizes ongoing ISSS programs through handouts, signs, Facebook and the listserv.  Collects parent contact information for our use and for the Parents and Family Association.  Maintains translated documents to insure updates each semester.  Maintains brochure and display board for ISSS.  Documents events by taking pictures and/or videos.

 

10%            Health Insurance Coordination

Provide support and education to international students regarding compliance with the Kansas Board of Regents mandatory insurance requirements. Coordinate waiver process for those with alternative qualifying coverage by working with on-campus offices (i.e. Human Resources, Information Systems, Financial Services) to create seamless process.  Work with United Healthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) to troubleshoot student difficulties.

 

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; excellent interpersonal skills; student advising experience; excellent oral/written communication skills; demonstrated interest in international education; experience living or working abroad or working with international populations.  Demonstrated experience in responding positively in crisis situations.  Valid driver’s license required.  This position requires some evening and week-end work.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree; knowledge of K-State; second language ability; experience creating and managing programs; experience with populations whose first language in not English; experience in higher education student services working with international students; experiences with public speaking, counseling, web design and social media; and a collaborative working style.  Exceptional organizational, leadership, adaptability, initiative, and flexibility are highly preferred skills. 

Salary Range: $38,000-$40,000 based on experience.

 

Conditions of Appointment:  A background check is required prior to finalizing an offer of employment.  Candidates must have approved authorization to work in the United States at the time of hire.
