Language Proficiency Policy for Undergraduate Admission

A. Many universities have rigid TOEFL requirements for admission. However, Kansas State University wants to make the admission process as easy as possible for you.
If you meet the academic requirements, Kansas State University can admit you with no proof of English proficiency (no TOEFL). Once you arrive, you will be required to take the English Proficiency Test (EPT).
The results of the English Proficiency Test (EPT) will determine if you have to study English, either full-time or part-time, or if you are ready to begin full-time university classes.  This is to ensure that you have the necessary English skills to be successful in your career at K-State.

B. If you would like to prove your English proficiency before you arrive on campus and want a waiver from the English Proficiency Test (EPT), you will need to provide one of the following items as proof of English proficiency:

1. iBT (Internet Based TOEFL)  - Overall score of 79
2. IELTS – Overall score of 6.5
3. ACT English subscore of 23
4. SAT verbal scores of 530
5. Four years in a U.S. high school with grades of C or better in all college preparatory courses

Transfer students from a U.S. university can also submit the following as proof of their English proficiency:

  1. 24 credit hours at an accredited US institution with English Composition I and II with grades of C or better.

***All scores must be submitted by the 5th calendar day of the semester in order to waive English Proficiency Testing or English classes for that semester.  Scores submitted after that date will receive a waiver from English classes for the next semester.  Score submission dates are NOT negotiable.***
