K-State eID and password
Students must have an electronic identifier (eID) to access K-State e-mail, personal web pages, iSIS, K-State Online, dial-in services, and other web-based systems provided by the university. This eID is also a personal e-mail address to which all e-mail from K-State will be sent.
Students can select their eID and set their password at http://eid.k-state.edu. It is important for students to keep their password private. K-State will never ask for your password in an e-mail. These messages are phishing scams and should be deleted. K-State policy prohibits using someone else's eID or sharing passwords. Students are required to change their password twice a year, at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
Buying a computer
K-State encourages new students to bring a computer to college. A complete guide to buying a computer can be found online. There you will find general hardware and software requirements, as well as information about specific departmental requirements. The K-State Union computer store has special discounts for students to meet their hardware and software needs.
Connecting to K-State
K-State offers several ways for students to connect to the K-State network:
- Students living in the residence halls have wired and wireless Internet access from Housing and Dining Services. It is a fast, direct link to the campus network and Internet.
- Students living off campus can access the Internet through dial-in service available with a monthly service fee through a local Internet service provider.
- K-State's wireless computer network allows laptops and other mobile-computing devices to link to the Internet while on campus in areas where wireless is available.
Protecting your computer
Computers connected to the K-State network must be properly secured to protect personal data and university information. Using updated operating systems and antivirus software is essential. K-State offers free antivirus software. If you are using antivirus software from a different vendor, you must remove it before installing the K-State antivirus software.
Residence hall students are required to have the following before connecting their computers to the Internet. This includes gaming devices:
- A valid, licensed operating system supported by K-State
- Installation of all current security patches for Windows or Mac operating systems
- K-State antivirus software installed with the latest updates.
