K-state challenge course

FAQs

Here are a few things to know:

  • No one is required to participate. We will be there to guide you through the experience. This is what we mean by “Challenge by Choice”.
  • Your physical and emotional safety is our primary concern.
  • You will have the opportunity to come to know yourself and others better through the experience.
  • Our staff is well trained in their belaying and facilitation techniques.
  • Everyone using the high course will be wearing a climbing harness and helmet.
  • Every climbing system we use has multiple backups.
  • You will spend the entire experience outside. (sun protection is necessary)
  • A portable toilet is located on site
  • Most of all you wIll have fun!

What should I bring to the course with me?

  • Clothing:
    • Wear athletic shoes, closed-toe shoes only (no sandals, open toes or heels)
    • Long, loose fitting pants are recommended. (These will protect you from splinters)
    • Wear shirts that will go below the waist. No mini t-shirts or tank tops. (If you are in a harness, you will be more comfortable in a longer shirt, and there is less risk of splinters)
    • Rain/wind jacket (if the weather is questionable)
    • No dangling jewelry; leave your valuables at home.
  • Bring your medical and waiver forms complete and signed. Groups that have all paperwork completed before arriving at the course spend more time in activities and less time managing paperwork on the site.
  • Bring a water bottle. We offer portable restroom facilities. Running water is not readily available, though we will work with groups who will be on the course for an extended period of time to refill water bottles.
  • If you are participating in an all-day program, or just need to stay energized, be sure to bring your lunch/snacks. Your group may arrange to have meals delivered to the course, and we could help provide catering and vendor information.
  • Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and insect repellent are encouraged. While you may be under the canopy of the tress for much of the program, the protection offered by sunscreen will be welcomed during times we are in open areas.

What if it rains?

We do not usually cancel for rain unless it becomes a safetly concern. We will however, delay or cancel the program if lightning is in the vicinity of the course. For this reason, we encourage you to have your vehicle nearby so participants can be sheltered. If we need to cancel because of bad weather, we will reschedule your group as quickly as possible.

How much time will the program require?

Each program is tailored to meet the needs and desires of the group and may even span multiple days but the average program lasts between 4 to 8 hours, depending on which elements the group wishes to experience. Ideally, we could have all of our clients come for a multi day program, spread out over a length of time. This allows for the most learning to occur. We do understand that this is not possible for everyone.

What facilities or amenities are available?

Portable toilets will be available on site. We can arrange catering and most other special needs that you may have.

Are we going to play silly games?

Programs are tailored to the age and maturity level of the group. Though some activities may appear silly at first, all are designed with a greater team building purpose in mind. A better time will be had by all and greater learning happens if the group arrives willing to let themselves have fun.

Is it dangerous?

Participant safety is of paramount importance to us. Our equipment is rated to hold weights far exceeding any actual use. All systems are backed up and double or triple checked. The most common health concern we have is splinters.

Do I need to be in outstanding physical condition to participate on the course?

Not necessarily! While some of the challenges available on the course can be physically demanding, there are many challenges which will push the mind much further than the body. Facilitators will work to help keep you informed of the physical and safety considerations associated with each element of the program.

Many of our elements are built to provide "universal" or acessible environments for those with physical challenges. Contact us for more specific information regarding these opportunities.
