Demonstration of Kansas Music Teacher Standards
Kansas Music Standard #7: The teacher of music has an understanding of music in relation to various historical periods and cultures.
- The teacher understands musical events and characteristics of various historical periods and culture.
- The teacher demonstrates effective strategies for developing student exploration of the music of various historical periods and cultures as appropriate for various developmental stages.
Knowledge of historical periods is a neccessity in music education. This allows the music educator to make connections to music history, and other content area connections for the students and the music. I have included a Music History III research paper on the vocal works of Libby Larsen. This research paper gave me the opportunity to analyze the music with historical influences by the composer. My other artifact is a lesson plan which integrates history with the music, concerning Mendelssohn’s “Die Nachtigal.” This lesson is an example of how research in analyzing the music and historical influence can be used to help the students use higher level thinking skills with music.
