The Music Teacher Apprenticeship Portfolio

 

Overview

 

The portfolio is the tangible collection of evidence made up of artifacts, evidence, and student work from the apprenticeship and documentation of educational progress.  Used collaboratively by the student and advisor, the student portfolio product serves as a springboard for facilitating and documenting student growth in knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The evidence in the portfolio reflects a studentÕs ability to meet requirements for completeness and quality. The portfolio is also an tool that can be shared in the college or post-secondary program applications process. It assists future teachers in understanding present levels of achievement.

 

Supplies

 

Students need to have the following supplies to assemble their portfolio.

 

    * 3-inch 3-ring presentation binder

    * 100 or more medium or heavy weight sheet protectors

    * Five notebook dividers with insertable tabs

 

Contents of the Apprenticeship Portfolio

 

The portfolio student product will contain work selected by the students and some pieces selected by the teacher. Students are expected to meet specific requirements each year. (See the sample Portfolio Requirements by year located in the appendix).

Assessing the Student Portfolio Product

 

Student Goal: The student develops greater understanding of his/her knowledge and skills in reference to becoming a music teacher through the collection and review of evidence in his/her portfolio. This will be assessed according to the following criteria:

 

    Organization

 

á         Section markers are well designed and labeled with dividers

á         Evidence is logically organized

á         Evidence is labeled and placed in the appropriate section Evidence is labeled and placed in the appropriate section

 

    Evidence/Content

 

á         All required evidence is included

á         Evidence reflects attention to detail: edited, free of errors, complete

á         Reflections are interesting, thought-provoking, and demonstrates critical and creative thinking

á         Evidence selected is representative of studentÕs best knowledge and skills

á         Evidence reflects student growth

 

    Quality of Reflection

 

á         Reflections indicate the ability to analyze and critique own work

á         Reflections are well-written including details and examples

á         Reflections identify and justify areas of growth and/or learning

 

    Overall Appearance

 

á         Portfolio reflects time and care invested in preparation

á         Portfolio is easily readable and pleasing to the eye

á         Portfolio evidence is maintained in good condition

á         Portfolio demonstrates creativity and originality

á         Portfolio design is well-balanced, artistic, and indicative of individuality
