Piano Proficiency Examination Requirements
(Rev. 2010)

Scales: All major and minor scales, two octaves, hands together, standard fingering.

Cadences: Level 3, 4, and 5 cadences in all major and minor keys (click here to see examples).

Traditional harmonization of a folk song: Provide chords, then create an accompaniment pattern (lh) while playing a melody (rh).

Transposition of the previous folk song: To any key within a major third interval above and below the original key to a key not more than four flats or sharps; the accompaniment can be in blocked chords, not a pattern.

Lead sheet harmonization: Play a melody and create an accompaniment pattern based on the given “pop” chord symbols (includes seventh chords).

Transposition of a two-voice linear piece: To any key within a major third interval above and below the original key, to a key not more than four flats or sharps.

Song Accompaniment: Prepare a given art song and perform it with a singer at a polished level.

Choral Work: Prepare a given choral work and be able to play any combination of SATB voices and play the accompaniment (harmonic distillation may be requested) with the voice parts.

Improvisation: Improvise a melody with given chord symbols.

Patriotic Songs: Prepare the three requested patriotic songs and be able to play any requested one(s) with faculty singing: The Star Spangled Banner, My Country ’Tis of Thee, and America the Beautiful (copies available).
