Audition
FAQ
Q:
When are scholarship auditions?
A: Auditions for acceptance as music major or minor (and/or potential
music scholarships) are held on the KSU campus during the spring semester
on scheduled dates and at any time of year (by appointment). Scholarship
funds are available through the Department of Music as well as University
Bands, and this audition is evaluated for scholarships from both sources.
Q: What do I need to play for a music/scholarship audition?
A: At a minimum, you must demonstrate proficiency in two of the following
five categories: 1) snare drum (rudimental or concert); 2) keyboard (marimba,
vibraphone, etc.); 3) timpani; 4) multi-percussion (concert percussion,
hand drums, etc.); 5) drum set. It is to your advantage to audition on
instruments of three or more categories. You will perform a prepared solo
or etude and sight reading on each instrument. (Styles demonstrations
are also useful on drum set.)
Q:
When are the instrumental ensemble auditions?
A: Marching band auditions take place during band camp, which typically
occurs during the week prior to the opening of the fall semester. Concert
band, orchestra, and jazz auditions take place during the first week of
fall semester classes. Sign up sheets are posted in McCain (222 for jazz,
226 for concert). Contact respective ensemble directors or me for specific
audition information.
