Friendly Reminders

Supervisory Committee:  Within the first year of study, it is your responsibility to work with your advisor/major professor in the selection of your supervisory committee members.  Your committee consists of your advisor/major professor and at least two other MPH graduate faculty.  After approval, the Dean of the Graduate School will formally appoint the supervisory committee. This committee will advise in developing a program of study, supervise the student's progress, and conduct the final examination. The advisor major professor serves as chair of the supervisory committee. Online forms for committee available at:  http://www.k-state.edu/grad/forms/

Program of Study:  Every student in the MPH Program who intends to earn a degree must file a Program of Study (POS), signed by members of his/her supervisory committee and the MPH Program Director.  The POS should consist solely of courses directly related to the MPH degree. Full-time students must file their POS before the end of their second semester of graduate study, and part-time student must do so upon completion of 9 semester credit hours in the semester.  Online Program of Study forms available at: http://www.k-state.edu/grad/forms/m-pos.pdf

Capstone/Culminating Experience:  All MPH degree candidates are required to complete a capstone/culminating experience.  This can be 6 semester credit hours of a full time field experience which includes a project completed by the student OR 6 semester credit hours of applied research AND 3 semester credit hours of field experience.  Resources to help with your field experience are posted at: Field Experience

Graduation:  Please review the pdfs posted on the Graduate School website under “Graduation and Commencement Information” at: http://www.k-state.edu/grad/students/gradandcomm.html  They list important deadlines pertaining to graduation.  If necessary, print them out and use them as reminders.
NOTE:  You must be enrolled in at least 1 credit hour of course work the semester you graduate.  This is a Graduate School requirement and cannot be waived (see Graduate Handbook, 1-4, Section D).

After you have completed all of your courses, your field experience or thesis, and your capstone experience, you are eligible to graduate.  The “Approval to Schedule Final Exam” form available on the Graduate School’s website (http://www.k-state.edu/grad/forms/#current) must be filled out, signed by your major professor and committee, and Dr. Cates as the Head of Dept/Grad Program Director.  The completed form is then sent to the Graduate School.  This form triggers two events needed for graduation.

  1. The Graduate School reviews your course work against your program of study and “clears” you for graduation.  If you have any incompletes or other discrepancies, you will not be able to graduate until the discrepancies are resolved.
  2. A final ballot is sent to your major professor to be filled out and signed by your committee AFTER you successfully defend your thesis or give your field experience report.  The signed ballot is returned to the Graduate School by your major professor and you are eligible to graduate.

If you do not participate in commencement, your diploma is sent to you after graduation.  Your transcript shows the awarded degree approximately one to two months after graduation.  If you need a copy of your transcript with the degree annotation, check with the Registrar as to the specific date that will be added to the transcript.
