Events & Activities
Each class of Mortar Board expresses their commitment to scholarship, leadership and service differently, however, below are activities that are consistently held each year. Check out the photos page to see Mortar Board in action!
MORTAR BOARD RETREATS
Conducted each semester, these retreats allow members to create
bonds with fellow members and build leadership skills. Goals
and plans for upcoming semesters are also developed.
ADVICE BOOKLETS
A new tradition of the XIX Chapter! Each year Mortar Board
compiles essays written by the membership into an advice booklet;
the booklet is distributed through New Student Services to every
incoming freshman in the fall.
READING IS LEADING
This project is part of the National Mortar Board "Reading is
Leading" initiative. Each week, two members volunteer to read
stories to children at local grade schools and daycares. The
storybooks are then donated to the reading location for addition to
their libraries.
FACULTY RECEPTION
Each year, Mortar Board hosts a reception to honor chosen faculty
members. Honored faculty members are chosen by Mortar Board
because of their outstanding achievements in teaching, advising, or
mentoring.
POINSETTIA SALES
Prior to the holiday season, Mortar Board members sell poinsettias
as a major fundraising activity for the chapter. This
fundraiser enables the chapter to award two scholarships each year.
ADOPT A FAMILY
Every holiday season Mortar Board adopts a family in need through
the Flint Hills Breadbasket.
ACADEMIC DECATHLON
Each spring Mortar Board and Kansas State University host the State
of Kansas Academic Decathlon. This event, for Kansas high
school students, is a weekend filled with various competitions
ranging from essay writing to super quiz.
USHERING/HOSTING CAMPUS EVENTS
Members volunteer their time to usher at both Landon Lectures each
semester and to host the university President and his guests during
home football games.
