Postdoctoral Research Fellows
If you are interested in joining the lab as a postdoctoral research associate I encourage you to contact me so we can discuss possible projects and funding avenues.
Graduate Students (Openings)
I am always looking for bright, motivated graduate students to join my lab at either the Masters or Doctoral level. Multiple graduate thesis or dissertation projects exist within the evolutionary and ecological genomics research interests in my lab. I encourage interested students to see peruse my research page and the ecological genomics page at KSU for further information about the lab, the ecological genomics group at KSU and life in Flint Hills. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions about the graduate program.
Undergraduate Students
If you are interested in becoming involved with research in my lab, please contact me. Additionally, please take a look at the people page for examples of undergraduates participating in various aspects of my research program. When I am deciding whether or not to take on a potential undergraduate these are some of the criteria I use in evaluating new undergraduates.
1.  Do you have a solid academic record?  You don't need a 4.0 GPA to work in my lab, but you do need to demonstrate the intellect and discipline required of a good biologist and a responsible adult. Your grades are a good indicator of these qualities. If you hated Genetics and Ecology (or if you barely scrapped out a C) then maybe my lab is not the correct home for you.
2. Do you have compatible research interests with my lab? You should be genuinely interested in the research of the lab. Life (and your undergraduate career) is too short to do things you find boring.
3. Do you have a good work ethic?  You absolutely must be reliable to work in a lab that uses animals for research.
4. Do you have a sense of humor? In my view, rigorous science and fun need not be mutually exclusive.
these evaluation criteria were originally written by
my friend Barrie Robison at U of Idaho and modified
        slightly for this page.
Mechanisms to Support Undergraduate Research:
At the University and Departmental Level:
The University, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Division of Biology each have a number of mechanisms to support undergraduate research at KSU, some of the programs I have been involved in are listed below. Please note the qualifications for each program are different so please talk with me or the individual program about specific details.
    For current KSU students
NSF funded Ecological genomics Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program
McNair Developing Scholar’s Program

    For student from other universities
NSF funded site based research experiences for undergraduates summer program in the ecology and evolutionary biology of changing environments.
KSU Summer Research Opportunities Program (SUROP)
